Holy entitlement, Batman!!!  I bet that poor little boy is going to grow up being embarrassed to be seen with his mother in public.

Just wait until the kid steals from the wrong person and gets a crack across the face from said person. It's appalling how people allow their kids to behave, but the OP handled the situation nicely. Mommy Dumbest could use some lessons in etiquette as well as parenting.

I suspect that this woman would not have felt so brave if the OP had looked particularly dangerous.  I also suspect that this was another case of an adult thinking that she could push around a teenager.  The OP is to be commended for handling the situation gracefully.  It is a shame that a security guard did not witness this woman's behavior so that he/she could explain the laws against theft to this woman.

Man-o-man what gall

I don't know about he rest of you but I was taught that you didn't touch other peoples stuff.

I think that I might have been tempted to tell the woman that she now owed me for the ball.  Since it was ok for her son to play with it, she might as well buy it for him.

I wonder if she uses the make-up in the aisle and puts it back too. (since there is so much of it, nobody will notice a little bit missing, and she did leave the bottle for someone else to buy)

Good for you, Ko-Ko.  That child will need all the help in the world to not turn out like his poor excuse for a mother.

Please tell me that didn't really happen.  I can't believe a mother would act like that.  What kind of example is she setting for her son!  Ugh! Some people!

Well done, Ko-Ko! You handled it precisely correctly. What's more, the small child showed himself to be more mature than the person he was with, so there's hope for him.

As for the so-called adult he was with...why do I suddenly have the Loony Toons theme running in my head?

I could barely believe it happened myself. I almost expected to wake up in my own bed with my mother shouting at me to get up and go to school! I wonder if the mother wasn't "all there"...

I am thinking she thought she could *intimidate* you as you are a teenager [perhaps you look younger than you are ? ]

Good for you for standing up for yourself.

Rude Mom: But I already promised him he could have it!
Ko-Ko: But MY mom promised me I could keep my personal property to myself!

Seriously--if another boy's mom came over and said, "You can play with that nice lady's cell phone w hile I go shopping," would that woman hand over her phone and show him how to call Fiji?

It's true you have to keep your promises to kids. That wasn't a promise, though. That was entitlement.

Unfreaking believable. It's pretty sad when the kid has a better grasp of property rights than his idiot mother.
If anyone wanted to try that with my lightsaber, I'd be tempted to demand $600 in cash, on the spot. Custom machining is expensive, and shipping fees are murder.

That woman thought because you were older than her son, you should give him your soccer ball and buy a new one for yourself.  (I've seen your other posts from reading them I think you mentioned are a teenager or 20ish).  You should say that sounds like a good reason and let her son keep the ball.  Then go take her purse (with car keys and all) and say that you want it and because you are younger, she should just go out and get a new car and purse. :D  Afterall that was her reasoning.

Seriously, I can't believe anybody would let their child take something from a stranger, let alone expect that stranger to give it to them because they are a ccccccchhhhhhhhild.  The fault would lay on that mother (or whoever she was) if he thinks it is OK to behave that way and gets hurt because of it.

I think Ko-Ko should have gone back to the uniformed security person who seems to be in most Target stores and complained that she was being approached by a stranger who was insisting she be given Ko-Ko's merchandise.
