This is a great thread.  YES to the Days and Dirty Dancing love.

And I already know lots of you are with me on Sweet Home Alabama.  I love most Reese Witherspoon ...

My favorite Reese movie is Freeway.  It's literally one of my favorite movies of all time (it's that mid 90s dark comedy with the way trashy cover).  And this isn't even a so-bad-it's-good fave.  Yep, it's right up on my list with Casablanca and The Godfather!

As far as "low brow" tv, I dig Days, Bewitched, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and a dark, campy one I recently Netflixed called Profit.

With as many Days Of Our Lives watchers as we have here, we should start a daily "Days" dish thread. ;)

In the thread on hating stuff that everyone else likes, I said I'd start a new one for stuff that people like to sneer at others for liking. So come on, what stuff do you like that people think makes you a complete Philistine? ;D

Hmm. I *love* CSI. I want to have Gil Grissom's children. I haven't gotten as much into CSI:Miami and CSI:NY, but I have enjoyed them the times I've seen them.

I really like _Dirty Jobs_ on the Discovery channel :).

I listen to country music (which most of my friends give me a hard time over).

My best friend now lives in an area where country music is popular, but she still hasn't developed a taste for it.

On the other hand, she thinks that Latin music (my preference) is lowbrow.

Sounds good to me CathyF.....Let me know if you start one up, and I'm there!

OT:  Also, another good DOOL board is the one at TWOP (Television Without Pity).  Lots of snark, but good discussion, and a lot of the posters have been watching for years and years.....

I didn't mention CSI (which I LOVE) because it's not thought of as "lowbrow", is it? It's wonderfully acted, written and directed!

I want to have Warrick's children. Oooh baby. He could carry that show, although I don't want to get rid of Grissom; he's great! Warrick should get his OWN show!! Not that I'm biased or anything. ;D

I love Christian Slater. Yes, he's a forty odd year old former junkie who will brawl anything that looks at him funny, but darnit, he was adorable twenty years ago! Well, that's what my Mom says.....I wasn't born yet.

I have Jesus Christ Superstar memorized.

Stephen King. I've read 33 SK's and have no intention of stopping.

I don't consider my CSI x3 jones or my NCIS habit to be "lowbrow". I do confess to owning (and loving) both of the Resident Evil movies. And I follow The Young and The Restless, as well as all 3 ABC soaps. Since I'm a nurse, my need to see every episode of ER and Grey's Anatomy can be passed off as professional development.
I dream of a world where chickens can cross the road without having their motives questioned.

That would depend what genre you're talking about. My preference in Spanish music? *squirms guiltily* Reggaeton. Talk about lowbrow. But I can't help it, it's just so danceable - even if it all sounds the same!

I do like other genres of Spanish music - salsa, traditional Cuban son, merengue, tango, etc. I'm just not much for boleros or romantic ballads (I'm not really into "romantic" ballads in English, either, so that's not very surprising!). It's taken me a long time to really appreciate my musical heritage, though - I just recently started getting into Cuban music again, after spending most of my teen years hating it. Just your typical teenage rebellion, I guess. But when I was a kid I would have rather died than express appreciation for Celia Cruz or the like.

To each his own; I do not enjoy reggaeton at all, but as long as the person in the next cube isn't blasting it, I'm OK.  Salsa, merengue, and that other stuff?  Love it.  Victor Manuelle and Gilberto Santa Rosa are my favorite salseros.

I love Celia Cruz.  Most of my colleagues had the pleasure to meet her about 6 years ago, before I worked in the Hispanic market; they said she was very nice.  We had the TV coverage of her funeral on the conference room sets the whole day it took place.

My taste is the polar opposite of yours; I love ranchera music.  Pablo Montero and Alejandro Fernandez are duelling over my heart all the time.  I also adore Marco Antonio Solis.  I've had the privilege to meet all three of them (not on the same day, of course).

David Bisbal is a fabulous singer and I particularly love his second CD, Buleria

Flamenco is amazing; I took lessons for 8 years.  Tango is da bomb, too.

However, I'm not a big fan of Luis Miguel or Alejandro Sanz and I don't think that Enrique Iglesias is anything special.  I'm also not nuts about most nortena music; that all sounds alike to me.

I like:

Pretty Woman. It's just an updated Pygmalion, and what's wrong with that? It's unrealistic? YA THINK? I was just considering packing for Hollywood in the hope that I'd meet a handsome man in a sports car on Hollywood Boulevard...

Dirty Dancing. Nobody puts Baby in the corner. Poor Patrick Swayze. On the Special Features on the DVD he says he SO didn't want to say that line. It's sweet, though!

Desperate Housewives. I find it like a comedy of errors, or to quote Al from Quantum Leap, "It's like watching... a car wreck, like it's horrible but you're too fascinated to look away!" I only started watching it to see Richard Burgi (Carl - Susan's ex-husband), but I like it.

T'mar, you and I must be long lost relatives, I would add to this list: Grey's Anatomy.  It's gotten really low brow since the last episode - but I LOVE IT!!!.

And yes, CSI is considered low-brow since, as another poster said, who wears white pants and 4 inch heels and a tank top to a murder scene? Not to mention the gratuitous violence/gore...::sigh:: as my friend says "Me and H have a thing going..."

Well, I agree that CSI Miami is a bit, er, far-fetched, but the other two aren't. I find the characters in the original to be very likeable - except Sarah, who I want to STRANGLE when she starts whining - but in CSI Miami the characters are all such self-absorbed, judgemental arseholes that you wonder why you're even watching. (Then you remember: oh, yeah: nice beaches!!)

and yea, Miami is the one I was talking about. the other ones arent quite as bad.  Although that makes them not quite as good either... ;)   (just as low-brow entertainment, of course)
