You aren't.  FIL is being rude.  He can't say he was fine with it and then get all snarky about it.  Anyway, he should be more concerned with your DS's surgery than what is convenient or inconvenient for him!

Well, you just ARE, okay! How dare your son need surgery? How dare the doctors not phone your FIL first to make sure the date is okay by him?

I have a brilliant idea. Since they're used to coming to your house for the family gathering, maybe they need to find someone else's house to hold it at so they can have their accustomed time.

You have my sympathy. Some people really think that the sun rises and sets on them. My SIL has a MIL that could fill a whole book. The woman got mad at my nephew because he had to catch a flight in the afternoon on Christmas day. He was ruining her Christmas because he refused to call his Navy CO and tell him his grandma didn't want him to go back to Saudi Arabia until after the holidays were over.  :'(

At least you know you are not alone.
