It's a pack of 5 cards that says: "Ignorance is not a handicap. Park somewhere else."

I once was in a debate with someone on a message board who said if you don't have the tag, you're not handicapped.    I was telling about a client of mine when I worked home health care who used a walker and could barely get around,  but didn't own a car and didn't drive, so she didn't have a handicapped sticker for when I drove her.    He said, no sticker means she isn't handicapped.    Like this poor woman was suddenly going to start running and skipping because she didn't have that card/sticker to hang on her mirror.   

The point was, when I drove her, I NEVER used handicapped parking. There was one grocery store where the manager of the store asked me to use the LOADING zone, (not the handicapped parking which was by the entrance)  to make things easier for my client and less of a hazard for other customers.     The poster called me every name in the book for using a loading zone for a (in his mind) non-handicapped person.

I rarely discuss this issue anymore, and that poor, non handicapped lady passed about 10 years ago.

Both my parents are handicap. While my mom can't walk without a cane. My dad had a heart condition that makes it very hard for him to walk far, he looks healthy but isn't. My dad routinely get yelled at for using the handicap parking.

I would use them only on cars that have no tags, permanent or otherwise.

In france they have signs saying "take my space, take my disability." They seemt o work.
My dad has a more friendly version of these signs on a post-it like pad saying "this is not a ticket. You are parked in a space reserved for a disabled driver. Please don't again." they are bright orange so you can see them a mile away!

My parents say that anyone who parks in a handicapped spot who isn't handicapped is MORALLY handicapped, lol.

  I love this idea! I am angered by people who park in handicapped parking spaces when they don't need to.

A woman I work with parks in handicapped spaces and says "I am blonde and menopausal, how much more handicapped can you get???" While funny, this is NOT a valid excuse. In that case I think ignorance really is her handicap.

Exactly. My mom has a heart condition. If I am with her, and someone ever said anything, I would probably not be very polite. Who do people think they are anyway? If the car has a tag, or placard, you really don't know for sure if the person in the vehicle is the person who it is intended for or not. Some handicaps are "hidden". So, I would err on the side of caution.

My friend has a handicap plate on their van (this is important later) He has cronic fatigue Syndrome, so, no his is not a visiable handicap, but there are days that a bath is his whole goal for the day. and has to take a nap after doing that.

One day we parked at a local K-mart and one of the city police just happened to by trolling the lot.

Saw us park the van and just about ran the police car into us trying to catch us before we went into the store.  Started ranting and raving about parking in the handicap spot. Was going to write us a ticket - blah - blah - blah.

My friend was having a BAD day and I could see him getting worked up to the point that if I LET him say ANYTHING  we would be at the station, for contempt or something.

So I sushed him up and politly told the PITA officer that we were going to park there and if he wanted to write us a ticket he was more then welcome too.

He pulled out his pad, plopped his foot on the bumper, whipped out his pen......

stoped dead, turned around, got into the police car and drove off.  Without saying anything -- no - I'm sorry or nothing.

That really drives me nuts.  Not everybody looks disabled, and I wish more people knew that.  And I know some people (okay, a lot of people) will use other people's tag, but that's no excuse to think everybody does and everybody's a dishonest liar, and you're the Handicap Parking Space Vigilante for stopping them.

As an aside, when I was in training at Disney World, we were told flat out: always agree with someones guest assistance card, and if someone has an animal with them don't say anything.  They have already gone through the proper channels for this.  It's okay.  Really.

  Yeah.  I have to agree with the ones who say that a handicapp is not always visible to others.  If you are talking about using them on cars that don't have any handicapp tag of any sort, then it doesn't bother me, but there are way too many people that don't understand that a person can look just fine and still be very sick or disabled in some way.
