Pet Peeves
« on: January 15, 2007, 05:56:37 PM »
I have read some hilarious stories of etiquette horror both here and on the main page. I've noticed that there are definitely some trends as to what cheeses people off the most.
So I'm going to ask. What etiquette faux pas make you the craziest?
Mine:
Bad/poor control over children
Not writing thank you notes
Expecting guests to pay for the privelege of attending your event, either in cash or labor
Cell phones (pick your faux pas here)
Bad table manners
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

When I ask a question and the response is totally irrelevant to the question.  Example -

Me: Mom, should I wear the chili pepper red or the sheer lilac lipstick with X outfit?
Mom: Did you brush your hair?
Me: Did I ask about my hair?! No! Thanks a lot! *Glares and storms away*

I also hate people who will interrupt everything to answer their cell phone and it is NOT an emergency.

Mine is when I finish up a transaction with a store clerk and realize that I was the only one to give a greeting and say thank you at the end.

Unruly children and the parents who won't control them
People who shout their personal business on cell phones in public
Lateness
Other types of passive aggression
Bad table manners.  No adult has any acceptable excuse for that.

A store peeve of mine: being pushed/rushed out of line by the person behind me before I've had a chance to put my card back in my wallet, my wallet in my purse, and take my purchases.

CathyF that makes me crazy too! I am naturally not at a happy place in the grocery store. So, when people try to rush me out of the way it doesn't sit well.

My biggest pet peeve is people who are always late. To me it shows an immense disrespect for everybody but the offender. And it galls me, yes GALLS me (!) that alot of people who are always late feel like they are always in control of the situation. ARG! Makes me cranky just thinking about it.

I hate that too, especially the cashier not speaking to me. Excuse me, I'm about to drop over a hundred bucks and you can't say "hi"??

A friend of mine is late ALL the time. It's pathetic. I can accept occasional lateness with a phone call apology in advance/right around the time of expected arrival. But when people start having to tell you to arrived 1-2 hours early so that you'll be close to on time, it's just sad. Once she was *3* hours late and after half an hour, we called her and she giggled and said she'd arrive 'eventually.' By the time we got to the benefit event where we were expected, there was no food left. We would have left without her but someone stupidly let her hold the tickets!

Bad customer service. I work in customer service and it's the worst when I see it in people I work with. I've been (very rarely) guilty of it under extreme duress, but there's no excuse for not greeting a customer, wishing him well, and making sure he found what he was looking for--even when you're earning minimum wage, as we do at my Blockbuster.

Parents of adult children who still baby them. A friend of mine cannot get up in the morning unless her mom wakes her up. Buy an alarm clock already--you're 25! Another friend, same age and getting married in a few months, doesn't pay ANY of her own bills, even though she has a job. And all she has to do is whine and her parents buy her whatever she wants.

Similarly, parents who although they dont' "baby" their adult children, don't recognize the adult.

Kids/teens with entitlement issues. At my job, I have so many teens who arrive and don't have their card or ID and want to rent, or try to rent when they are not added as potential renters on the account. It's a legal issue that we cannot rent without one or the other, and I've had kids say, "My mom's going to call you and complain!" or tell me that it's okay for me to let THEM do it.

I think this is the most annoying one listed. People don't realize that the event of their lives is not at the center of others' lives.

And taking it beyond big events, there are people in my life who think everything revolves around them (maybe I'll just go and start a thread about this or something before I really get going!)

But outside that particular list, my biggest etiquette pet peeve is just old-fashioned rudeness: people who make negative comments or ask questions about things that aren't any of their beeswax.

But it's not always the person behind you......sometimes it's the clerk.  They'll often start scanning the next person's items.  That's when I really feel rushed.
It's not what we gather along the way that matters.  It's what we scatter.

You are SO right! In fact, most times this is the way it is when it happens to me. Still drives me nuts!

This is one of my biggest.  You have to get tough with people like this.  Never let her hold tickets and always leave after she's 15 minutes late.  You don't want her wasting 3 more hours of your life.

The rest of yours, total agreement.

1) Comments about weight/marital status/health/pregnancy, especially from strangers
2) Children acting out while parents do nothing, adopt a "Oh how cute" attitude, or go into denial that their children need discipline
3) Bringing uninvited guests
4) Cell phones and pagers used inappropriately
5) No-shows after invitations accepted
6) No RSVPs
7) People who dominate conversations to the exclusion of others present
8) Excessive graphic medical talk outside a doctor's office, clinic, or hospital, especially at meals
9) Tardiness
10) People who talk in movies and other situations requiring silence
11) Gift grabs-all sorts
12) Hosts who expect guests to pick up things for them or to pay for the occasion
I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.

Mine are:

Children screaming in public.

People who walk too slow across the street or in the parking lot. I mean, some people just walk down them middle of the parking lot, going so slow, knowing that you are trying to get around them.

Off-shoot of above, people who block the aisle-ways at the store. GET OUT OF THE WAY! they stop and talk to their friends, whatever, just get out of the way!

People who complain about their jobs but refuse to do anything about it.

When my mother treats me like I'm 2.

1.  People who like to comment about how much money they make and how blessed they are to be making such money.
2.  People who like to comment about other people's weight and diets.
3.  People who make disparaging comments about another religion or political party.
4.  People who continue trying to engage you in an argument after you've told them you no longer want to discuss it.
5.  People whose discussions are actually lectures, because they really have no desire to hear what you want to say.

Oh my gosh.  I just described my in-laws.  How'd that happen?
