I JUST said that!
« on: January 16, 2007, 03:02:42 AM »
I have a co-worker - actually he is a supervisor. Not quite management or assistant manager, but in control under them. He is a nice guy, but he has a behavior that drives me CRAZY.

When a customer (C) asks me (M) a question the usual exchange with customer, me and co-Worker (W) usually happens like this:

C: Can I get a fat free mocha?
M: Well, the mocha syrup has sugar in it,  but other than that we can do skim milk and leave off the whip cream. I could also cut the amount of syrup in half.
C: Ok that sounds go-
W: Yeah see the mocha syrup has sugar in it, there is nothing we can do about it becasue it is a pre-made mix and we only have the one kind. Now we can put less in depending on how chocolately you want it to be. Also, we have skim milk instead of whole milk and we can leave the whip cream off it. I myself like to make it with two pumps and..."

By this time the customer has usually made up their mind and is just sort of waiting for him to stop talking so they can place their order.  He does this with almost every question - I answer it very sufficiently and succinctly, but he has to reiterate exactly what I said, but using about 50x the amount of words.

I know he means well, but it is REALLY fruserating.

I guess my questions are:
1. Am I making a mountain out of a molehill?
2. Should I let it go or tell him to knock it off? If I SHOULD say something, how/what?

Edited to add that it sort of annoys me on a personal level cuz it feels like he is implying I don't know what I'm talking about.

How annoying.

Why is CW butting into your conversations with your customers?  Doesn't he have his own to take care of?  Can you ask a manager how to handle it or to handle it for you?  It sounds like a good opportunity for management to set up an advanced training class in teamwork.

My initial impression is that he likes to talk to people.  Does he?  Some are chatty, some are not.  I'm in the latter category, and would probably feel sorry for you rather than think less of you, if I were C.

I would smile and tell him "I've got this one."

I'd probably try to make a little joke out of it if I were friendly with the coworker. "Well I guess we agree then!" with a laugh.

If that doesn't do it, at a lull in customers maybe try to talk to him, "Hey Talker, I notice that when I answer customer's question you usually answer with the exact same answer as I had, do you think I am giving out the wrong information or something else?"

YES. If you get corned by him, its really hard to get away from his conversation unless you have a really good excuse!

I like that site, too ... after someone posted on the old board about Wide Lawns, Narrow Minds i started reading BaristaBrat (they have links to each other).

You could start re-repeating everything your co-worker says again (again). :)

It's alright, man. I'm only bleeding, man. Stay hungry, stay free, and do the best you can.
