Maybe You Want to LEARN How to Use it BEFORE Listing It On Your Resume (update)

lilysuch, I understand your frustration, and kudos to queen and your boss for sticking up for you.  I have a method for dealing with those helpless types.  I dont do things for them. plain and simple.  I *tell* them how to do it, step-by-step, if necessary.  Example:

V: Can you format my resume for me? I want this paragraph in arial font, and 1 inch margins
LS: Sure, I can show you how to do that. Have a seat.[lets V sit at computer, stands over her] Highlight the paragraph you want in arial font, select edit, select font....

It takes a strong backbone and patience, and they usually whine or come up with 'Can you do it? I am really not good at computers.' I just stick to my guns and say something like 'It's not that difficult, I will walk you through it' Pretty soon, they learn how to do it on their own, because they hate how long it takes them to do it with you standing over them, and by virtue of the fact that they are actually doing it themselves...

I am a firm believer in the old saying "Give a man a fish..."

Let's hear it for Boss and Queen!! It sounds like someone needed to take care of that situation.
And whining at you because it was your fault she didn't get the job? Hey, whatever gets her through the night...but in the cool grey dawn of morning I think we all know the truth there.

Unfortunately, some managers or HR departments ask for qualifications that have nothing to do with the job in question.  Now that job applications are often sent electronically, managers can weed out all the applications that don't mention a particular skill - and your resume won't even be seen, even if you're the best candidate ever.

DH is currently looking for something in computer programming, and it's tough.  He is well-versed in a few languages and passably familiar with a dozen more, and the same with operating systems and programs and lots of other things that are only known by acronyms.  But if a job is 99% C++ and 1% FORTRAN, the company will only look at people who know both.  DH is very, very good at C++, and could probably teach himself FORTRAN or at least read a program written in it - but if he makes his resume sound like he's anything but an expert, he'll never get the chance to tell them what he can do.
