Fall semester paintings
« on: January 16, 2007, 09:10:03 PM »
Hey all,

I know I mentioned several times that I just started painting this year, so I just thought I'd let you all know that I have an account on Photobucket where you can see my paintings if you want.  I'll add more as I do more....anyway, here it is:  http://s141.photobucket.com/albums/r45/MermaidGirl84/

For those of you who don't want to open another window, I'll post my paintings separately, one at a time.  Here they are, in chronological order:

Monchrome study of coffee cups, done September of 2006.  This was my first painting ever.

Complementary colour study of three white calla lilies, done October of 2006.

Cubist study of a platform shoe, done late October-November of 2006.  The shoe was originally black, and the table was originally white, so I decided to use the basic complementary colours of violet and yellow as a jumping-off point, but incorporate other colours as well, and use brighter and darker colours to depict positive and negative areas of light, respectively.

Open project, of a maple leaf, done November of 2006.  I chose to do a maple leaf because I'd done a drawing way back in September, of a maple leaf I'd found on the ground, because I thought it was pretty.  At the time I did this painting, the leaves were starting to turn brown and gross, and the trees were looking pretty bare, so I wanted to save a piece of fall so I'd have it with me all winter.  I'd originally wanted to do a sky-blue background, but that looked bad, so my friend Trish told me to make the background light green instead, so I did. :)

Nice work!  I wish I could paint, or draw, or do SOMETHING artistic.  I have no skills in that area at all.  You do, and I'm impressed!!

Thanks for posting your paintings.  I liked looking at what you're doing in your class.  I'm beginning my first art class on the 22nd.  I wanted to take Beginning Drawing but it wasn't available and since my drawing is limited to cartoons and elaborate doodles and nothing 'real', I didn't feel I should take the intermediate class.  The instructor said the Color and Design class is going to be more like the beginning drawing class, so hopefully it will work for me.  I took a collage class recently and loved it, but otherwise, I am a novice.
I went to your photobucket and also enjoyed the photographs you posted.  The one of the flowers in the window was gorgeous and when I saw the thumbnail of the railing of the porch I thought it was a piano keyboard.   It was funny to see that it wasn't when I enlarged it.  Yep.  I do need new glasses!
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

Is that the calla lilies painting you posted about before? It's gorgeous. I love the complimentary colors in that even more than in the cubist shoe.

What kind of paints did you use?

modified to clarify oil, water, acrylic, not what brand of paint.

The leaf and the lilies (what a great book title!) look like something you would see on Home and Garden TV.

You did a wonderful job on all of them.

Yes, the calla lily painting *is* the one I posted about before, that was originally supposed to be for Tanya's birthday, but then ended up in the library instead.  I do all of my paintings with acrylic paint, because Pablo discourages us from using oil paint, because the painting studio isn't well-ventilated enough, and acrylic paint can be watered down to create a "watercolour" effect.  Also, acrylic paint dries much more quickly than oil paint, which is an advantage in a way, because it makes painting go faster when you're not waiting around forever for the background to dry so you can start the next phase of the painting.

That is what i use, too, for most of the same reasons. I just mess around with paint for fun, nothing else, and i am horrifically sloppy, so water based acrylic is the only kind i touch.

I think you posted the callalily one on one of the old boards.  I love it!!  It's just lovely!  SOmething I'd hang on my wall.

I def need to get back to painting and stuff sometime... perhaps once the dog's outgorwn her "must investigate everything with nose and paws" phase.  And once we get a place with more than one bedroom ;)

Again, LOVE your work!!  Very well-done--you've got a great eye!

I start my art class today.  Hope it's fun and that I am as successful as you've been with yours.  I hope to discover some hidden talent!
