Ice Storm Traffic Etiquette
« on: January 17, 2007, 04:27:34 PM »
Hi!  I tried to post this from the motel I was staying at but it didn't work.  My cousin's laptop has fits.

As you may or may not know, we had a HORRIBLE ice storm on Friday (and Saturday, AND Sunday!).  Springfield, MO is trashed.  Power is still not back on for everyone (20,000 still out, down from 70,000).  We are a federal disaster area.  Not a tree in the entire city is intact.  My neighborhood looks like it's been bombed.  This is the first day I've been back at work.

During the storm, most of the traffic lights went out, which meant that the intersections had to function as four-way stops.  My cousin told me this story about something she witnessed on Saturday.  I laughed my rear off over this.

She was sitting at a very busy intersection, waiting her turn, behind a brand new Mustang Shelby, driven by Entitlement Boy (hereafter referred to as EB).  There was a very large Dodge Ram in front of that, another car in front of him, and a car next to the front car.  EB decided that he didn't want to wait his turn.  He started honking.  Relentlessly.

Cousin says she saw the three guys in the other vehicles look at each other, gesture violently and point to EB.  Then they all three got out of their vehicles and approached the Mustang.  Cousin rolled down her window so she could hear.

The three guys gave EB a very loud, verbal lesson on how to behave at a four-way stop during an emergency. Cousin said she could see EB lean waaaaay back from the window during their tirade.  After they were finished and left, EB sat meekly at the light and waited his turn.  Cousin followed behind him for another mile, and she said EB waited his turn at every subsequent stoplight and never honked again the entire time she was behind him.

It might have been rude for the three to yell at him, but considering the circumstances, EB was lucky he didn't get pounded!  At least he learned his lesson!

I thought Ice Storm Traffic Etiquette was to stay home. :)  That's what we've done for 3 days -- though I'm glad to hear you've been able to get out of your home and back to at least a bit of normalcy!

That's a very unusual situation when someone gets his comeuppance without anyone actually being physically harmed.  I'm not quite sure there's any etiquette involved in jumping out of one's car and intimidating another drive, but certainly they've lived out a fantasy I've had once or twice!!!

Educating other people about traffic safety rules is not necessarily rude. EB was lucky the person in front opf HIM did not have a gun and a short fuse.

Oh! You're in Springfield? Do you live there? I live in Independence, and I'll be transferring to a college there in the fall.

The Mustang boy was lucky both he and his precious car escaped unscathed.

Well, I guess you could say that the etiquette involved, that is, EB's, was POOR etiquette!  Only someone with no brains/manners would act that way in an emergency.  Most people here have been very nice and considerate.  I had to get gas on Sunday and there was a very long line, but people were waiting patiently for others to pump their gas and go pay, without acting like brats.

I still don't have any power, since Friday.  I'm still not staying at home.  I want to go HOME!  :'(

{Waves from Columbia!}

What is it with young guys in brand-new Mustangs?  Last Friday (the day our ice hit) DH was driving on a stretch of highway with a big curve/hill/curve in our SUV, behind a guy in a large truck.  Along came Mustang Sammy, who brilliantly deduced that the Stang can navigate ice/slush better than two utility vehicles.  After tailgating DH for a short distance, he accelerated quickly and passed both trucks, shooting a nasty glance at DH.

DH was amused, but not amazed, as the Mustang slid right off of the road and into a deep ditch.

Edited for spelling...

In TX,
mostly all back to work and school on delayed schedules.
Yesterday was a news report about how still a few flyovers were closed due to ice, and to USE CAUTION!
cue to story:
woman slid off a CLOSED road and had a wreck. She had missed the closed sign and cones.  Why, you ask? well, she was on her cell phone with her boyfriend.
Ack!
I barely made it to get the kids to school in twice the normal time,  and all the drivers seemed well behaved.
My kids enjoyed the 2 vehicles that had little snowmen built on top, and watching all the ice fall off power lines.  Crash!
Fear is temporary...Regret is forever.

Hi, Independence!

You're not kidding - they could have smashed them both.

Ha ha...Mustang Sammy....*snerk*  You're right, it always seems to be a Mustang or some little college/high school car like that.  Also, around here, if you tick off someone in a great big Dodge Ram, be prepared for a great big guy to get out of it!
