Frightening Technology!
« on: January 17, 2007, 07:47:49 PM »
Oh my goodness, I am sitting here and by no prompts - no button pushing or anything like that, the DVD player randomally ejected itself and is now sitting open.  It nearly gave me a heart attack!

Does technology ever sneak up and scare anyone else?  Any good stories so I don't feel COMPLETELY stupid for being scared nearly to death by a DVD player? I swear my heart stopped!

not quite the same - but I have a wireless doorbell by my desk so that if Mom wants me she doesn't have to yell.

Never fails that when the thing goes off - I jump a foot.

We used to have a fluorescent light ring in our bathroom. Sometimes it would come on, sometimes not. We had it replaced when hubby and I were in bed one night and the darn thing came on for no reason. Finally hubby admitted he had flicked the switch then forgot to flick it back down when the light failed to come on. Talk about show stoppers! I jumped a foot.
There's also the Gizmo in my junk drawer that will start whirring at random too....I can't wait for the battery on that thing to die.

Ha ha, that reminded me of something my brother did - He had this stupid cup he bought at the Rainforrest Cafe in Orlando. When you pushed a button on the bottom, the thing would light up and blink colored lights. Good for a 5 year old but my brother is 31...

Anyways, he used it so much his wife got sick of washing it every day so she told him he could wash it himself. Becasue he is lazy, he put it in the dishwasher, despite the obvious (and also written on the bottom) reasons why you shouldn't put a cup with lightbulbs in the dishwasher.

Somehow, instead of just breaking, the cup got stuck permanently in the ON position, so whenever anyone went in the kitchen, there was the cup, blinking away in its full glory. He tried to hide it in the cabinet, but it would scare people when they were trying to get a cup in the dark and they opened the cabinet door and there was this cup, flashing like crazy!

Edited to add: Luckily the batteries died... Eventually. They had an unsually long life... unfortunately!

That's like the flashlight I had in my junk drawer that would get bumped on. Have you ever walked into your kitchen at night to see one of your drawers glowing? I thought Zool was in there...
You know, I think there's a woogeyman in my junk drawer.

One of the little girls I babysit has this doll that will start talking on its own.  It's really creepy and I make her keep it in her room because it reminds me too much of Chucky.  It doesn't look like him, but I don't like that it talks without anyone doing anything to it!

In the middle of the night, we heard some odd, loud noises come from the living room.  I was scared.  It turned out to be very loud static coming out of the computer speaker.  Since then, I always turn the speaker off when not using the computer.

I've had that happen as well!! It really scared me, especially after that White Noise movie about ghosts coming through electronic staticy things!!

One night I suddenly heard a man talking in our basement.  He was talking very fast but I couldn't hear what he was saying.  Then I  heard him laughing. I thought there was a crazed maniac in the house!! Then I heard the music...
My hubby had been listening to a cd player earlier in the day while working in the basement and forgotten to turn it off when it got to the end of the cd.  Our electricity had gone off for a little while in the night and when it came back on, the cd started playing again. Even when I figured out what had happened, it still felt creepy to go downstairs and turn the thing off.

I despise toys that talk.  The boys don't have any and if they get one, it "disappears".

All because my younger brother had these Sesame Street dolls (Big Bird, Oscar & Cookie Monster) that you put a tape into them and they would tell stories and sing songs, and their mouths would move in time with the words.

When he outgrew them they were put into the attic.  I used to hang out in our attic a lot.  I loved it -- there was an old wardrobe up there, and some loose floorboards where I stowed a few things I didn't want my family to know about.  I often went up there for peace and quiet from my family.

One day I was up there reading and Big Bird starts talking.  Thing was, there were no batteries or tape in him.  The next day my boyfriend was over and I made him go up in the attic (alone), find the things and throw them away.

Ohhhh so creepy!  This is exactly why I'm terrified of dolls and toys that do things.  I hate dolls!  So did you ever go back up there again after that?

Yeah.  It was my refuge.  Once my BF had disposed of the possessed toys, all was well :)

This didn't happen to me, but to a friend of mine, and I thought it was pretty funny. She had put a DVD of Snow White into the player for her daughter and left the room for a long period of time. Eventually she forgot that she had left the DVD playing until she heard a woman's voice saying, "Hello?? Hello?? Hello??" over and over again. Scared her to death! She went into the room and the witch was on the screen looking right at her and was the one saying hello over and over again. Apparently the DVD had a feature where if you leave it on for an extended period of time, it starts talking directly to you.

Talking toys are creepy in the extreme sometimes!
I work in the toy dept. of a retail store, and you wouldn't believe how many times those things turn THEMSELVES on. Sometimes they have light and motion sensors, so they are supposed to. It's still pretty creepy when they start moving or talking.

But some of them are not supposed to be able to do this - and they do anyway.

And the worst ones are the ones who say things they shouldn't! We had little turtles who sang the alphabet song, but only when you pressed a button. Every once in a while we would get one that growled and muttered when we went by - whether it was turned on or not.

And I won't even get into the evil Elmo giggling....
You are only young once. After that you have to think up some other excuse.

I love my TiVo, but sometimes I put it on Pause or Menu and forget about it, and then after a period of time the TV comes back on and I get quite startled.
