Indian food-sides?
« on: November 07, 2007, 01:38:07 PM »
We're having butter chicken over rice tonight with naan (providing all recipes turn out ok-lol). I was trying to come up with a side dish for the meal but don't have a clue. Does anyone have yummy ideas for Indian side dishes? The only criteria is that it can't be too spicy (think medium salsa type of heat) because DH doesn't like spicy.

Cucumber Raita:

1 c cucumber, peeled and chopped
1/2 c scallions, chopped
1/2 c yogurt or sour cream
Fresh coriander
Paprika

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix well.  Top with a little chopped coriander or paprika.

Biriyani

Steam some rice, with a few saffron threads thrown in.  Saute onions, peppers, garlic in butter and mix in the rice.

Saag Aloo

5-6 potatoes (waxy not floury)
1tsp salt
1 lb fresh spinach
6tblsp oil or ghee (clarified butter)
1/2 tsp black mustard seeds
1 large finely chopped onion
2 cloves finely chopped garlic
1 tsp garam masala spice mix
1/8 tsp cayenne powder

Boil and drain potatoes. Wilt the spinach and squeeze. Chop the spinach finely

Heat the oil and fry the mustard seeds for a few seconds. Be careful because the do pop out of the pan. Add the onion and garlic, turn the heat down to medium and fry for 3-4 minutes. The onion should be slightly browned. Add the spinach and fry for 10 more minutes, stirring constantly. Add all the other ingredients and cook until warmed through.

I usually serve Indian food with rice and naan bread as well as

mango chutney
cucumber raita and maybe a mint raita
sometimes a potato or spinach side (kind of like the one Mechtilde mentioned)

Have you checked the book by Camellia Panjabi? It's great!
