So I just realized even if we do Christmas Morning Brunch, DF's Oma will probably spend Christmas Eve at home alone.
Since I am trained (deep, pervasive Gram training) to take over situations and FIX them... I just suggested to DF that we should have his Oma and maybe a few of the other relatives over for a Christmas Eve dinner.
Fine. No biggie. Brunch the next day can be prepped easily enough and I suspect we'd have fewer people for dinner anyway...
The thing is... God help me I love his family and all but what they serve for dinner is bad German food. I leave their house and whimper. So I want to show them what good food is like and if I can squeeze in German influences all the better...
Anyway this is their regular menu:
-two types of ham, one yummy, one bland
-bacon gravy, aka chopped bacon cooked and served with all the fat in a gravy boat
-potatoes, plain, boiled, gummy
-some type of creamed veggie that tastes like it came out of a can
-kale, mushy, mushy, mushy kale
-crescent rolls from a can
I don't want to obviously upstage things but here is what I was thinking:
-spiral ham, baked with some delicious glaze
-regular gravy or maybe a bacon-based gravy but NOT bacon in fat
-potatoes mashed with butter, garlic and cheddar
-some sort of green, blanched and tossed with bacon... I'm feeling spinach
-lettuce salad with olive oil, cheddar and croutons (the only way DF will eat veggies)
-honey-dill carrots
-freshly baked garlic-rosemary bread or some sort of homemade rolls
-apple pie for dessert
All suggestions and thoughts will be appreciated.
