The Madness Has Taken Me - Christmas Eve
« on: November 12, 2007, 11:32:44 PM »
So I just realized even if we do Christmas Morning Brunch, DF's Oma will probably spend Christmas Eve at home alone.

Since I am trained (deep, pervasive Gram training) to take over situations and FIX them... I just suggested to DF that we should have his Oma and maybe a few of the other relatives over for a Christmas Eve dinner.

Fine. No biggie. Brunch the next day can be prepped easily enough and I suspect we'd have fewer people for dinner anyway...

The thing is... God help me I love his family and all but what they serve for dinner is bad German food. I leave their house and whimper. So I want to show them what good food is like and if I can squeeze in German influences all the better...

Anyway this is their regular menu:
-two types of ham, one yummy, one bland
-bacon gravy, aka chopped bacon cooked and served with all the fat in a gravy boat
-potatoes, plain, boiled, gummy
-some type of creamed veggie that tastes like it came out of a can
-kale, mushy, mushy, mushy kale
-crescent rolls from a can

I don't want to obviously upstage things but here is what I was thinking:
-spiral ham, baked with some delicious glaze
-regular gravy or maybe a bacon-based gravy but NOT bacon in fat
-potatoes mashed with butter, garlic and cheddar
-some sort of green, blanched and tossed with bacon... I'm feeling spinach
-lettuce salad with olive oil, cheddar and croutons (the only way DF will eat veggies)
-honey-dill carrots
-freshly baked garlic-rosemary bread or some sort of homemade rolls
-apple pie for dessert

All suggestions and thoughts will be appreciated.  :)

sounds GREAT. what's your address again??

the only thing i would change is the rolls - if they are expecting plain, then make some plain and some with the rosemary/garlic stuff.

Hey! make yummy German stuff, like we do  ;D

some of the foods we eat during the Christmas time when in Germany:

potato salad (vinagary type) and sausages (on Xmas Eve or on the 23rd)
raclette or meat fondue (accompanied with potatoes, thinly sliced and grilled turkey, mushrooms, pineapple, salads, mixed pickles, tzaziki)
"Tafelspitz" (a great roast) with roasted rosemary potatoes, broccoli&cauliflower, salad and two types of pudding
Turkey breast with Spätzle (German noodles)
Poached fish with rice, soup and salad

I'd serve the potatoes without cheese if that's the only starch dish. And ditto the part about offering some unadorned rolls. I love a plain hot roll with butter at the holidays.

I don't think they'd really be bothered by flavored rolls or cheese in mashed potatoes but I guess I can ask DF's Oma...

magdalena, you're redeeming German food in my eyes!

And hey I think we should do an E-Hell Con and make it potluck.  :P

I don't think we can advise you until we actually taste the meal you have in mind. So when and where?

thanks, Eden  :)

My MIL may not be the greatest cook, but DH's Oma has shown me over and over again how amazingly yummy German food can be.

Yeah... my DF's Oma... I don't know whose fault Christmas dinner is usually and I'm not going to pry...

Maybe you can come over and teach me German cuisine?  :)

I'd love to
...if you don't mind the fact that everything's kind of adulterated by my Scandinavian (cooking) roots
