I think you are right to not say anything. Even if she is pregnant, it's possible that she doesn't want people to know yet.   I just recently announced my pregnancy, prior to that I had a couple of co-workers who noticed that I was looking ill a lot and asked me outright if I was pregnant.  Since I had previously miscarried, I had absolutely no intention of telling anyone until I was past the first trimester.  I hadn't even told my own mother at this point. It really put me in an uncomfortable position.

I think Dave Barry says you should not ask a woman any question related to pregnancy unless you can actually see a baby emerging from her body at that moment.  ;D

You were wise not to ask.  If she wanted you to know, she would have told you.
There was an average weight lady in our town when I was growing up and she looked very, very pregnant, but wasn't (she had some kind of uterine tumor, I later heard).

One of these days I may ask permission to link to some pictures I have of myself, from the side, no undies (can't really see anything).  I looked like I was 5 months pregnant (on top of being chubby) and it was fibroids.  I took before and after hysterectomy pictures and it looks like I was deflated.
Fibroids are the devil.  When I had them I didn't look pregnant, but then, in my pregnancies I didn't show until I was pretty far along, and didn't get real big, although my kids were hardly petite at birth.  Anyway, my uterus was the size of a five month pregnancy.  The doctor took a picture of it and gave it to me.  (I promise not to post it, though, even if I can find it.)

I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

If your neighbor does say something and you want off the hook, perhaps say something like, "I thought you might be, but I really didn't want to say anything until you did.  You know how these things are."  Since a lot of women (especially those who've suffered miscarriages or are worried about jobs!) don't announce their pregnancy the instant they get that positive test, this reply is totally understandable, and it gets you off the hook in her thinking you thought she was putting on weight.

I think at this point, I'm just going to pretend the whole thing never happened.  Chances are it didn't phase her at all, and I'm just being paranoid (and maybe projecting a bit?).  I'm a bit sensitive about my middle area myself.

Shoo, I'll bet you anything she wasn't bothered in the least that you didn't say anything first.  Heck, she probably hasn't noticed.

And like many others have said, this is a vastly less embarassing situation then "No, I'm NOT pregnant".

I wouldn't worry about it.

No, Shoo, you were definitely right not to say anything.  I've aways been of the opinion that unless you see an actual baby emerging from someone's body, you don't ask a woman if she's pregnant!

Here's the thing - even if she is pregnant she might not want people to "know" and/or discuss it. I knew a woman who had several miscarriages. She was 5 or 6 months pregnant before she officially "announced" it becasue she didn't want to have to explainto people if she lost another baby. Most people knew before they officially "knew".

I remember thinking the manager of my apartment complex looked "a little" pregnant, but of course I wasn't going to say anything.  When I went to pay my rent the next month, she had a baby in her lap! :o

As for predicting gender, I had a complete stranger come up and tell me I was having a boy.  I was annoyed as all getout that she thought this was her business.

She was right, but still :P
