Was My Boss Rude??
« on: January 22, 2007, 01:02:20 PM »
As you all know, I am toiling away in Retail Heck. Actually, I have not worked in 2 weeks. That's retail for ya though.

Anyway, Saturday, I went in to pick up my last paycheck. It was the weekend and we were just out running around, not really doing anything important. I walk in to the store and asked my DM (district manager) for my check. And she's like, sure! Then she looks up and notices that I am not wearing make-up.

Well, why should I? I am not working nor am I going anywear important. I made some comment that I haven't broken any mirrors yet nor scared anyone.... She was saying "I don't even step out of my house without make-up!" and she kept going on and on about it.

Well, I will be the first to admit that I am not the best looking person in the world. I have never claimed to be. But ya know, she ain't all that either. But I would never tell her! You don't say to someone, you're ugly without make-up! WHich is what it seemed like she was saying to me.

So, what should I say to her next time I see her? And Do you guys think she was rude?

Honestly, don't say anything (unless she brings it up again). This one's not worth the drama.

If she does say something, a simple, "It's my personal choice. I'm secure enough in my appearance to go without."

FWIW, it is rude to comment on someone's appearance unless asked first.

She definitely was rude.  I'm not sure there's anything you can say to her now, but if she ever pulls anything like that again, just say "Thanks for your concern about my appearance, but fortunately, I'm not on the clock now, so I don't have to worry about the store dress code."

I'm not sure she was as succesful at criticizing you as she was exposing her own insecurities.

Unless she followed up her comment with, "....and you don't need it!  Your skin is beautiful!", she definitely was being rude.  Just chalk it up to her having a moronic moment.

"I don't even step out of my house without make-up!"

You are to be commended for not blurting out "I can see why!".

That is TOO funny!

Yeah...That is what I was thinking!

Why even say anything? She is one of those people who open mouth and think later. Maybe she was thinking ooooh maybe I should not have said that!

Whatever!

even if she were to compliment someone? Or do you just mean in this situation?

I don't see it as much as her being rude, as her saying in a round about way:  "Gosh!  Even if I wanted to put you on the floor right now, I couldn't, because you're not dressed for business!"

Though I must admit, I've been guilty of checking in at the office on my day off...looking like something the "cat" wouldn't even touch, let alone "drag in."  But my schedule is secure and I'm not waiting to hear when I'll be working again.  If I were, I'd go in much more presentably.  If nothing else, to let them know subliminally that I'm ready and available for someone to put me to work...and not appearing to be moping because I'm not working.

Never let'em see you sweat...or give'em any reason to THINK you're sweating!

There are certain kinds of rudeness that one can't respond to without being rude oneself, or without incurring serious negative consequences.  I think this is one.

I'd let it go unless she makes a pattern of too-personal comments, in which case I'd say to her, "I'm really not comfortable discussing my personal appearance because it doesn't relate to my job."  If she doesn't get the hint then, I'd take it up with HR.  But note, I'd only do this if your boss gets into a habit of crossing personal boundaries to the point that it really interferes with your ability to do your job professionally.
I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.

She may have just been commenting (it was still rude though).  My mom is the same way.  If she is leaving the house to go to town, she will take a shower, fix her hair, put makeup on, and dress rather nicely.  Just to go too Wal-Mart.  It absolutely drives her insane that I can go in casual clothes, my hair normal and no make-up.   ::)

Yes.  Rude and foolish.  She successfully offended one of her employees.  I don't wear makup and once when I was seeking work went to an employemnt agency where the woman who interviewed me told me I should put my makeup on straight.  The problem was, I wasn't wearing makeup.  I still haven't figured out what in the heck that was all about, but I sure got alot of mileage out of the story.

I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

My first thought would be to reply, "Yes, I can certainly understand why!"  But that would be even more rude than she had been.  Would have been fun to see her reaction, though.

I'm amazed at how opinionated people can be about what is essentially a personal choice.  My choice on make-up is that I dress up my face in accordance to how I dress up my body.  That means when I'm wearing casual/grungy/comfy clothes, I don't wear make-up.  When I'm in formal attire, I've done the whole kit and kaboodle.  Most of my life is spent somewhere in between and my usual make-up consists of eye-liner, mascara, something on my lips and sometimes rouge.  But really, what business is it of anyone else's no matter which way I decide to go?
It's not what we gather along the way that matters.  It's what we scatter.

Unless you are a model or sell make-up, I don't think she has the right to say anythign even if you were working. You are a better person than me because if I had listened to her go on about how she would never go out without make-up, I thikn I'd want to say, "Well in your case, that's reasonable".

I was not moping. I was simply stating a fact! I was out with my family anyway and would not have been availible to work, even if they had wanted me to! We just happened to be in the area and I told DH that I needed to stop in for my check.

What offened me by her comment was that she looked at me like I was just so ugly without makeup. BTW, Pottery Barn Kids sells bedding, bedroom furniture, toys and occaisonal furniture for children. So, yes, I do have to dress nicely (professional dress), but I always feel like make-up is optional! I have one assistant manager who never wears make up and her dress could not be described as professional. Maybe only business casual. But that is not my place to say anything about it.
