Can someone hand me some duct tape.. for my mouth?!?!
« on: January 25, 2007, 08:13:43 PM »
I seriously have foot in mouth disease.

Yes, seriously.

So what does one do to cope with such an ailment?  I think before I speak (usually), but there sometimes happen to be someone nearby who possibly becomes offended by what I say.

So the backstory:

I have a group of friends, and we are basically always joking around - they're my silly group of friends... and although I have not known them for a considerably long time, we always talk about the strangest things and go off on the weirdest tangents.

These tangents get me into trouble.  Because I suffer from verbal diarrhea and simply cannot shut my mouthpiece.

To make a long story short, one of the girls (for reasons I cannot remember) brought up how she mistook a lady for a man not long ago.  I told her that I feel her pain because I did it before with a woman who had considerable amount of facial hair, and trust me, its quite possibly one of the most embarrassing situations *ever* for both parties involved.  Another older member of the group mentioned that we will all get facial hair with age (to which we all had a little laugh about).  I tried to then bring a bit of seriousness into the conversation by mentioning a television show that I recently saw where a doctor EVEN had difficulty with this sort of problem.

The little "party" died down a while later, and as we walked away to go to our rooms, I noticed that a particular young boy who seems to have health problems related to this was there the whole time.  I asked my friend about it and she confirmed that he heard the whole thing, saying that she wished we "would have just ENDED the conversation".

I'm nearly in tears now.  I feel terrible that I might have offended the kid, and quite possibly disgusted these friends.  What should I do?  Apologise?  Or just let it go and hope that they have forgotten it all (and I'm just blowing this out of proportion).  I pride myself on my normally half-decent manners, but yet I keep doing stupid things like this.

What should I do??????

I feel your pain  :(

This might be a case of "least said, soonest mended" and hope that no one brings it up.  If the boy acts strange around you (you didn't say if he himself was a friend of yours), then apologize.  Otherwise, act as nothing happened.

Thank you.

He isn't really a friend per se, he is a much younger student (everybody else present is an "older than average student") and has kind of attached himself to the rest of us...  This is probably the second time something was said in his presence that should not have been, as we keep forgetting that he kind of lingers around.  The other 18 year olds seem to alienate him... its a pity actually.

Oh boy did you hit a nerve over here! I am the queen of the ill-timed joke. I have a very VERY sick sense of humor that is not universally appreciated and I have stepped in the bucket of poo on more than one occasion by cracking off a comment that is meant as a funny but comes out all wrong. I blame the filter between my brain and mouth. Clearly it is faulty.
The best thing to do is find the offended party and apologize sincerely and as soon as possible.
I've got foot im mouth disease too. I'm considering just not speaking in public without a comprehensive list of everything I need to know about a person...it would save me a lot of blushing and stammering...
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

I can't imagine how a women's discussion about facial hair has any bearing on a young boy with health problems.   Someone help me make the connection about why this conversation would have been bad?

I'm confused too.  Unless the young man can't grow facial hair and thus the comment about how "we will all get facial hair with age" is embarrassing to him?

Oh I know what you mean by sick sense of humor... what I think is a funny joke often leaves people's mouths open...  I blame it on the fact that I am in the engineering field so I am constantly surrounded by men and their odd humor.  ;)

Two people have confided in me that they were not sure what gender he was and had difficulty talking to him for fear that they would guess the wrong one and offend him.  I had the same sort of problem until someone mentioned his name.  It is just really difficult with some people.

lol.. on a tangent, I was mistaken for a boy when I was a teenager.  I cropped my hair off in defiance towards my mother and as a result, was constantly thought to be my brother.  I have a recent picture posted in that coffee break thread and I assure you I do not look manly... however I think while especially in the teen years, it is only easy to get the lines blurred if someone happens to wear their hair or clothes differently.

On gender misidentification: I used to be mistaken for my brother (and him for me) on the phone all the time.  Our voices both broke and lowered at age 15.  He's a year younger, so for about a year, my voice was lower than his (I'm an alto/tenor and therefore have a fairly deep voice for a woman).  During this time, every time someone called and one of us answered, the caller would say the wrong name.  These callers included our parents!  I thought it was really funny, but he didn't.

^ People think I'm my mom all the time on the phone! It's really weird because we sound nothing alike. Weird.

Okay......so call me dense, but I still don't understand why a discussion about women's facial hair and the presence of a child (male OR female) with health problems is supposed to be bad.

I'm with you--the only thing I can think is that the "health problems" aren't actually involved.  Then it would just be feeling awkward about talking about mistaking genders in front of someone to whom that happens often, but I agree, Chocolate Cake: a lot of the additional details make this confusing.
