Help with digital mouse!!
« on: January 22, 2007, 02:48:47 PM »
The scroller wheel on my digital mouse is giving me fits. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. This is a fairly new phenomenon. I replaced the batteries five minutes ago, in case that was the problem, but no dice.

Do those things get ornery when it's cold? It's been cold all week, and even when the furnace is running (which it hasn't been all day due to problems caused by the cats … but that's another story), it's always cold in my office.

Any advice, anyone?

There isn't an opening to get to it that I can see. Since it's digital, it doesn't have a mouseball, and the only opening I see is for the batteries. (Unless I unscrew the thing and take it apart, which with me would probably cause more damage than help. ;) )

Spraying canned air in and around the scroll wheel might help.

You can also restart your computer. That seems to fix a very wide range of issues, for whatever reason.

My fiance says that if it was cold enough, that could be the problem, and in fact, if you get it to room temprature and it still doesn't work, it might be permanently damaged.

So, see if it works at "normal" room temprature first, and if not, you may have to replace it or something...

It did get pretty cold in here while the furnace was out. The trouble is, even with the furnace on, it's still cold. My office is the coldest room in the house in winter and the hottest in summer.

It's working rather erratically right now. Maybe I'll take it in another room for a while.

Thanks for the info!

I did take it in another room and leave it for about an hour, and now it is working better! Thanks!

Maybe I need to knit a little sweater for it to keep it warm. ;)

Just think of the business you could do on ebay: Mouse Sweaters for Cold Computing!

*has a mental picture of my dad's ex girlfriend's son's pet rats all in sweaters*

And no problem on the advice!  Like I said, not my own, my fiance's.  If he hadn't known, it would have gone to his twin brother.

One's a business major with a focus on Information Systems (the businessman's IT guy) the other's a computer science major.

So... I don't know the answers, I just ask them!

Bwahahahaha! What a good idea! I'll have to design a pattern.

I'll probably make a "sock buddy" — cut out the toe of an old sock so the digital pad is still clear and keep the rest of the sock on the mouse.

No, YOU asked the right questions.  I copied your post into messenger, and asked what he thought.  :)
