Wonderful Thanksgiving Weekend....
« on: November 25, 2007, 11:15:00 AM »
I might be narcasistic :-)  But I had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend, and I thought it would be fun to hear about other gorgeously fun and happy stories of hospitality.

We do the weekend at my parent's, and the whole extended family on my side in the US comes (and sometimes from the UK).  It was amazing.  My brother and the first cousins arrived Wed night.  My household and my parents cleaned, cooked, and prepped - but laughed, gossiped, and ate - for the weekend prior.  My SIL left for her mother's on Monday.  We were over 30 to dinner, deep fried one of the turkeys, and everyone from age six to age eighty helped, played in the leaves, and enjoyed themselves.  We eat late, and eat and drink long, followed by movies, games, and my husband teaching the little kids Blackjack :-)  This year, one of my cousins, aged 23, asked that we return to our childhood custom of "what is everyone thankful for" - which after my uncle's toast, we did (while eating!).

One cousin brought his new girlfriend - we're intimidating, loud, and there are a lot of us - but she was amazing - she held up well, and the aunties (who are picky) actually loved her.  One one cousin's father's side (he is related to us through his mother), we absorbed the kids - a series of events has left that side rather small, but they are wonderful people, and marriage or blood they are family, and we were blessed to have them with us for the weekend.

Friday my SIL came back.  My cousins ran a massive grill out in the backyard for lunch.
The "kids" left - aged 12 to 35 - went bowling, then the remaining family - around 25 - visited my new house and I had the honor of serving my first family tea.

Friday night was "Indian night" - we had a first course of salads and samosas, then rice, pullau, lamb curry, salmon curry, bass curry, shrimp curry, daal, and veggie curry.

The "big kids" - aged 23 to 35 - much to the sadness of the 12 and 19 year olds :-) - went out bar hopping Friday night, we were out until 4, and despite at least one bad hangover, we had an amazing time.  Plus I think one of my cousins and my cousin's cousin hit it off - they aren't related!! - and I really think they would be an awesome couple.

I hear the "biggest kids" as Dad refers to the 55 to 80 year old crowd - stayed up past midnight with one room watching movies and another singing and going through a bottle of 21 year old scotch.

Saturday we watched movies, went to the new Dulles Air and Space museum, and pigged out with a giant bacon and sausage-y breakfast my Mom and Dad made us (though Mom administered bloody Mary's and screwdrivers as well!), leftover lunch, and pizza dinner.  Everyone left yesterday.

I'll add mine.  We actually were out at my folks' for the whole week.

We live in Texas and my family lives in a very nice, small and EXPENSIVE town in California.  The folks live in a tiny little house on six acres on a bluff overlooking the Pacific.  Sound nice?  Oh, it is. They have a cute little guest house (sadly, no view from there) so we can have our privacy when we want it.

Two things made our stay particularly nice this time. First, DD is now eight, so she old enough to not be a holy terror, which makes my mom a lot more mellow than she used to be when DD was a very rambunctious child.  This meant lots of peace and quiet, ample free time since Grandma and Grandpa now love having her around and she loves being out in the country where she can run around and chase chickens while DH and I relaxed and, for a rare treat, came and went as we pleased without worrying about getting a sitter.

Second, with the exception of my little nuclear family, my entire extended family now lives in the same area, including my grandfather, who is still kicking up his heels at 99 years old, so we got to see everyone!  Of course, they are all trying to get us to move "home", but to be honest it doesn't bother me at all.  They just love us.  For whatever reason, this week was nothing but good feelings.

Oh, and the turkey weighed in at 28 pounds.  I bet they're still eating leftovers.

I had a wonderful Thanksgiving too!

My fiance got here Tuesday afternoon, with a giant box of chocolate (so I don't go crazy on him during the "full moon") and we spent the evening with my parents and my brother.  Wednesday, the two of us did some food shopping for our appetizers, fixed those up, and he helped me make my apple pie.

We had Thanksgiving dinner at my grandparents-my grandpa's getting old and doesn't get out at all, and we weren't going to let him miss what might be his last Thanksgiving (even though Mom has a brand new house to show off-just moved here to take care of grandparents)-and my uncle and aunt and their three boys drove in and stayed until Friday.

It was the most family I've seen together in ages.  Poor Jason was afraid my cousins would hate him because he was marrying me.  I had to reassure him that I've seen them twice their entire lives, and that it was more likely that he would be a live jungle gym for them, than that they would hate him. (Actually, my entire family loves him-almost as much as I do ;D)

Jason was also afraid that, being in Louisiana, we were only going to have Cajun food for Thanksgiving.   :-\  Reeeally not sure where he got that idea.  Now, if we had had a shrimp boil, he'd have loved that; I think he thought we were going to serve nothing but gumbo and jumbelaya.

And, we have almost all of our Christmas shopping done :D.  We ventured out to the mall Friday and Saturday afternoon; it was crowded, but not too bad, and we weren't looking for sales.  We got smart and pooled our resources this year since we're "official."  And since we don't really know each other's families well enough yet.

And then I got sick Saturday night.  Bleagh.  But Jason was an absolute sweetheart and took wonderful care of me.  He even went online to discover the proper care for a person with the stomach flu.  It was so sweet.  So it didn't ruin the weekend after all.

I think it may be the best Thanksgiving yet.
