Why is everyone assuming that Dresser Queen did this out of maliciousness, and not just plain stupidity?

Marina, if you want to go wild on someone, go wild on the shipping company - they're the ones who really screwed up big time.

It's quite possible that she broke it accidentally but wouldn't the common reaction to be regret and an attempt to make amends?

I'd go after the shipping company to pay for the replacement but I do know that leaving packages with neighbors is very common, and something that I am grateful for.  UPS in particular has inconvenient hours and is far away from my house so I'd much rather they leave it with my neighbor.

I agree - I didn't view it necessarily as maliciousness but she certainly displays a disdain for any property that isn't hers.  But, while it may have been just carelessness, she acted as if what she did was perfectly all right, required no apology, and then made out that she was the victim and terribly put-upon.

I am a clumsy sort on occasion and find myself having a very different reaction to my breaking something belonging to someone else, even if by accident.  As in, I would leave a note immediately that I received the box for my neighbor (upon receiving the box).  If I broke it in the meantime, I believe my reaction would have been along the lines of "I'm sorry - but I dropped the box and I think I broke it.  Please let me know if I did, and I will be happy to replace it.  Again, I'm really sorry - please let me know if it is indeed broken."

And I certainly wouldn't have opened it.

I've got to agree.

First, there is absolutely no reason for her to have opened it - and isn't it against some law to open mail that's not yours?

Second, dropping it once is understandable (sort of). Dropping it repeatedly is not, and with this particular person, smacks of malice.

I think that it was this:

DQ: Well it is a little heavy so when I took it back to my place I accidentally dropped it a few times in the garage, so I opened it to see if it was OK...and it mostly is.

I find it a bit mind-boggling that someone can "accidentally" drop something "a few times" before you even leave the garage.

Not to mention the fact that she was trying to say it was "mostly ok" umm it's glass and it's broken - there is no way that is "mostly ok".

:::HUGS::: to you though Marina

Although neighbour probably did drop it a few times, either due to spite or stupidity, it's up to the company to overnight you a new one.  I would demand this, because it was the company's choice to use that carrier.  It wasn't YewPeeEss by any chance?  I've had issues with them leaving packages on the step, or with neighbours I don't know.  Not everyone gets along, and leaving a package with a neighbour these days is just insane.

Based on my overall "feelings" about Dresser Queen (family thought that neighbors should, of course, come over and help move heavy furniture out of the parking area into the townhouse/unit; comments about parking, comments about the tree on the front porch being trash, accusing the neighbors of stealing her accumulated newspapers after returning from vacation, and comments about "poor people" baking while borrowing a cup of milk) I am getting a mental picture of (at one extreme) a mean bitter old lady without even twelve cats to love.  Perhaps even someone with mental issues (whether recent dementia or long-term feelings of being persecuted) who takes it out on those around her by making nasty comments or other small acts that will make them feel some of the pain and isolation of the Dresser Queen.

But there is also a bit of me wondering if this old lady used to pull the wings off flies sixty or so years ago when she was a toddler............because she seems to have a knack for hitting painful spots with her barbed comments.  Is she doing this on purpose or through mental illness is the only question - if it is mental illness, she needs a keeper.  If it is because she is a mean spirited bit of nastiness at a lower moral and spiritual level than pond scum - then she needs to be in a place where she is kept from doing nasty things to nice people.  Prison, a nursing home, a mental institution, or some similar places come to mind as options...............

And now we wont have it use for the holiday and it just makes it feel "ruined" which I know is childish.

That isn't childish, this is a matter of faith. An important religious item that was supposed to be used in a holy celebration was destroyed. You have the right to be hurt.

I can't get past the fact that she opened the package.  And it would be my strong belief that she broke it either taking it out of the package or after she had it out.

I receive a large amount of packages, and modern-day packing (with very minor exceptions) virtually insures a non-broken item.  Dropping it --even on a concrete floor --would most likely not have done this damage.

Depending on how far you want to pursue this --and I think you should --I would immediately notify the HOA, and I would include a list of all things that have occurred with her since her moving in.  If I remember correctly, she is a renter (not condo owner), and it would be my belief that HOA could notify actual owner that this is not a desirable tenant.

Of course, I would still file a claim with the shipping company, but I believe you said you had done that or the company from which  you purchased the item has done so.

Celebrating a religious holiday in just the right way for your family (with all the special meanings) is so very important.  While I am glad you found a usable replacement, I am so sorry that this has happened.

Heck, I've accidentally dropped things a few times - haven't you ever kind of juggled something, and then had it slip and fall, and then fall again? Or is it just me who's that clumsy?  ;)

I'm still saying that there is a possibility that she accidentally dropped it and then thought she'd see if she could fix it somehow. Stupid, lack of boundaries, no social skills, not used to dealing with people, etc - but not necessarily evil and malicious.

Marina, how was it packaged?

I'm starting to think that Jerry Springer might be more appropriate for Dresser Queen..drama seems to be her middle name!
