When something posted is obviously a rant, I think the best course of action is to quietly report the thread.
I have noticed that many posters, in spite of the OP being a rant, will turn the thread into an interesting and productive etiquette discussion.
At that point, I don't think it does anyone any good to scold about rants being against the rules or trying to effect the same thing by asking if there was an etiquette question.

When other posters have gone to the trouble of making lemonade out of a lemon, I think that should be respected  Too often, how to post or not to post becomes the topic of discussion instead of the etiquette issues.
