i don't think it's a faux pas.  i must say that i am always a tad jealous when i visit my SIL's parents' home before Christmas as their gifts spread across half the living room.  It's very pretty but i was always a bit jealous.

Under the tree as soon as received or wrapped.  We got to snoope and pick around and shake and rattle them and try to guess what they were.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

I'm having our Christmas celebration with a friend today, and it depressed me that I suddenly don't have as many presents under the tree because I had to pack those up to take! (Of course, hers was one of the larger ones under the tree. <g>)

I don't see anything particularly greedy or grapsing about having the presents under the tree, so I don't see where your mm is coming from, OP. I can see toddlers and pets making gifts under the tree problem, though.

We put gifts under the tree as soon as we get them.

Ours were put under the tree as they were wrapped, then Mom got mad because sister and I shook gifts to figure out, and we're pretty good.

I guess I should post an addendum that my presents go under the tree as soon as they're wrapped... but any bags with tissue paper out the top get put away shortly thereafter because the cats go nuts over it. <sigh> Makes my poor tree look kind of naked.

We have always put many wrapped gifts beneath the tree during the days before Christmas.  I loved to see the children sneakily shake or feel a gift!  We double-boxed lots of items and did things like put in little rattly rocks or bells to trick the gift-shakers.  Today the kids are 14, 18 and 20 and yesterday I caught two of them examining what was under the tree.  It warms my innards.

If anything, seeing a family with abundant gifts beneath the tree would fill my heart with joy for them and how blessed they are to have such largess!

Presents to other people we haven;t seen yet and to each other go under the tree. Santa delivers the rest

in my family the presents family and friends are giving each other go under the tree whenever they are wrapped.

presents from Santa only show up on Christmas Day after Santa has paid a visit on Christmas Eve of course!  ;D

my tree looks much happier now that I wrapped all my gifts to my family and friends and put them under her (yes my fake tree is a she and she's called Evie)...now her toes are warm!  ;D

Oh, and I think I should maybe add that when I was little we always put the tree up on the 23rd and I got to spent Christmas Eve morning decorating it to keep me occipied until mom was ready with the dinner preparations and could take me ice scating/skiing/playing in the snow to make the time pass until Santa came in the evening  ;D

Now that I'm all grown up the tree goes up a few days earlier (and my nieces and nephew help decorate before they decorate their tree on Christmas Eve  ;))

I had to laugh on Saturday, when the women at my cookie party asked if all my presents under my tree were empty boxes and just for show.  They weren't.  They said that they all looked like something you would see in a magazine or in a department store.  Nope, I'm just a Martha Stewart wannabe.  :)

As soon as the tree goes up and we have presents they are wrapped and under the tree.  Usually the tree is up before presents are purchased but this year we have a huge pile of presents wrapped in DH's office waiting for our tree to be purchased. (This weekend whee!!)

We've always had presents under the tree before Christmas. There are usually a few that don't appear until after everyone has gone to bed Christmas Eve, though. The only problem I remember with the presents being out early was years ago, when we still had a live tree, the family cat, Charlie, would splash the water out of the tree's stand onto the presents nearest the trunk. Then there was the year he ran around the house at full speed (interesting to watch and hear, as the floor was linoleum), went into the playroom and leaped into the tree! Some presents had to be re wrapped, and some ornaments didn't survive!
Work fascinates me! I can stare at it for hours!

We put them under the tree about 5 or 6 hours before guests / family arrives.  The main reason is the pets... they are way too curious.  Before dogs, we would put them under as they were wrapped.
