coworker goofed.
« on: January 26, 2007, 12:23:03 PM »
As I have mentioned (whoo hoo!).  Cop stopped by in his cruiser at crossing guard.  While I was out crossing some people (the mom who strolls into traffic) a guy got out of his car and talked to Cop.  He complained that my coworker didn't get out of her car to cross the same people (who get to her corner first).

Cop said he would pass the info along (he did...to me!).

Should people have to wait for my coworker to get out of her car to cross them, or should she be out waiting for them?

I think she should be out waiting for them...

I will tell her she missed people and  a motorist complained.

I'm confused.   Like you, she is a crossing guard, correct?   If so, why is she sitting in her car instead of standing at the ready for pedestrians?

I think I'm confused by the story as well.  IIL, I know I was at the old forum and should know all the details, but I'm sketchy on some of them (plus, we have some new people here).  Can you fill in the gaps a bit about the players and the situation?  I didn't get your post at all, I'm afraid! :)

MOST crossing guards sit in their cars, as we are out there a long time (up to 2.5 hours) and there are stretches of time between groups of students.

We were told not to by the administration, but the police officer who oversees us said it was okay.  I mean, most of my coworkers are old and it gets cold out.  My friend is in her 70's.  She does have a tendency to miss people.  Most of the kids  are accompanied by their parents, though.

I prefer to stand outside because I would otherwise get distracted and not see the students.

Okay, I asked her what was what.  She had gotten out of her car and motioned for the people to wait for her, but they crossed anyways.

This was the parent who strolls into traffic.

Is this person being paid to be a crossing guard, or is it voluntary? If it's a job, it doesn't sound like she is really doing it.

IMO being a crossing guard is an important job and can be a dangerous one. If this woman for whatever reason cant do the job properly then maybe its time to find a new guard. I'm sorry but 2.5 hours is not a long time. Why cant she bring a lawn chair and a thermos of cocoa to make it thru her shift?
