Literally every day while at school I'm bombarded by these precious little things screeching obscenities into their cell phones. Now I have a foul mouth, and I have to watch myself, but these people's language is beyond foul: graphic terms for genitalia, the "f" word beyond repeatedly, like every other word, you name it. They go tripping all over campus, into the library etc, carrying on the foulest conversations you ever heard. I may swear, but I do not do it in public!
And they discuss the most personal things possible, mainly sex....ugh. Yes, we're all proud for you that you are the life support for a genital, and we're on tenterhooks to hear more about how "horny" you are...NOW SHUT UP!!!
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

Way back when cell phones were something new and exciting and incredibly expensive - and therefore something that gave you prestige - my mom was waiting at a train station. There were some 10 people or so there, and one of them had a cell phone he was speaking animatedly into about something business-related. It all sounded incredibly important (she simply could not help hearing what he was talking about it), and it went on for 10-15 minutes. I'm sure most of you have figured out what happened after those 10-15 minutes: The phone rang. He turned an amazing shade of red and ran out of the train station.

I once had the pleasure of sitting across from a young woman in the bus, using her cell phone to describe, in vivid details, her last visit at the gyneocologist. She was speaking quite loudly, and pretty much the whole bus could hear her, which lead to most of us just staring at her in disbelief. Didn't seem to bother her.

Haha... that happens to me all the time... I'm on a phone call and it's dropped and I don't know it so I am talking away until the phone rings in my ear again. that man SO could have played that off ;)

ha, these stories are funny.

I once was in a ladies room where someone was using her cell phone, IN THE STALL!  After having a normal conversation, I heard her say "oh, I am in the bathroom, that's probably what you are hearing"

that. is. so. gross. !

The worst mobile phone conversation I over heard:

We were on the train with Boo who was around 10 months at the time.
A guy got on and did the "I-can't-entertain-myself-on-public-transport-so-I-have-
to-make-phone-calls-about-trivial-things-while-speaking-loudly" thing.

Seriously.

The whole carriage got to hear about how bored he was over and over again at full volume.

Anyway,

Boo was doing his baby shrieking thing that babies love to do in public places.  If you don't have kids
its when they quite happily attempt to scream as loudly and high-pitched as possible.
We were trying everything to get him to be quiet.   (Saying "hush, Be quiet", feeding him raisins, playing.... nothing was working)   Most of the carriage was understanding but then Mobile phone guys pipes up with a loud.

"Some f***ing kid keeps yelling.  I should just throw it out the window."

There had been some small quiet conversations before that but then the WHOLE train went dead quiet.  Boo went quiet too but that was mainly because he was watching Dad physical restrain Mom.

Thankfully, the guy got out at the next stop.   Otherwise it might have been unpleasant*

I know what Boo was doing was annoying but we were trying to keep him quiet.  Honestly, the guy on the phone was louder than him and much more persistent.

*As I told my husband, I was just going ask him how he would feel if I threw his phone out the window.

The worst cellphone call I ever heard:

I was on a flight from Houston to New York. A well-dressed woman in probably her early forties gets on across the aisle from me, accompanied by two young boys, probably 10 - 12. As she sits down, she pulls out her cell, and makes a call to someone. It soon becomes apparent that this someone is her ex, or soon-to-be-ex-husband. It turns into a five-minute screaming match filled with invectives, ending in her final words of "Well, I wasn't the one who had the ILLEGITIMATE CHILD, WAS I?"  :o

I felt so sorry for those two boys.

This wasn't on a cellphone, but it was still a hysterical conversation to overhear.  I went to the tiny post office in the building next of mine, wanting stamps to send a postcard internationally.  The lady who ran the counter and I had a nice little chit chat, about the Easter pics of her twins, and about the amazing Christian daycare she enrolled them in.  When she realizes that her list of stamp prices is out of date, she decides to call the main office and this is what I heard:

"Hi shug!  I've got a little girl here who wants to send a postcard to Canada. Can you tell me how much they cost?"
...
"What do you mean you don't know!?!  Don't F*** with me!"
...
"I swear to G**, if you don't find the answer in 10 seconds, I'm gonna come down there and bust a cap in your a**"
...
"Uh-huh, uh-huh, that's what I thought you'd say."
...
"Twenty seven cents?  Aww, thanks doll. You're the best.  Don't forget to bring something to the potluck after tonight's prayer meeting!"

She then smiled at me, ignoring the dropped jaw, gave me my change and put stamps on the cards, wishing me a blessed day.

I've been in that same situation, but the conversation was:

her: Oh, I'm in the bathroom.
caller makes some reply
her: well, it's the only time I had to call you.

Uh... really... this person is so busy the only time she has to make a personal call is in the restroom stall.  Thank gosh I don't have her busy life!!

BG - My school is built around a Central courtyard. We are in the process of remodeling the school (was supposed to be finished in August)

Parent comes into my pod is looking out the door looks in the other rooms. Sees me (4th and 5th graders are at lunch), I have kindergartners on the computers. She motions me out of the room. She is obviously concerned or upset. I figure that the 3rd grade G&T kids have escaped their sub (she wasn't very competent, this was the 3rd one in 3 days due to a family death). So I'm preparing to call them over and march them back to their portable via the AP's office.

She points a little fearfully to the courtyard and whispers that man is just sitting there talking to himself. I think he may have wander over from the apartments. (The apartments on either side are very run down. Lots of good hard working people live there, but they also have drug dealers and registered sex offenders). I look outside and stifle a giggle.

I tell her "It's OK, that's Steve - he is in the foreman on the construction (replacing foreman who was fired for falsifying records - Steve has been working very hard to fix things for us).

Her "but he is talking to himself"

Me "No, he has an earpiece for his phone on his right ear, Really it's OK. You did exactly the right thing, but I know him"

Oh - about the 3rd graders - They are now on their fourth and last sub. She is a retired teacher who taught on our campus from 1966 - 2006 (last spring). The kids adore her because she is one of those firm, structured, fair, loving teachers they all feel safe with. No more 20 min bathroom trips inside the building.

Yay-my first post on the (yet again) new site!

Calls I've overheard that made my jaw drop: 1) College students making phone calls from the bathroom stalls. They weren't on the phone when they entered, and the phone didn't ring while they were in the stall, they actually made the phone calls from the stall. (This has, sadly enough, happened on several occasions.) Can't you wait 30 seconds before calling somebody?

2) Young girl (late teens) behind me on a 5 hour train trip, talking with her grandmother. She spoke loudly enough for the entire train car to hear her: "So I really want to kick Jane Doe's a@@, but I'm not going to. Grandma! I'm not that stupid grandma! I'm not going to get in trouble again! You're so dumb! I just got out of jail yesterday, grandma! And it wasn't my fault! And I'm not stupid enough to go right back in. So I'm not going to kick Jane Doe's a@@ even though she deserves it, the little [insert more expletives here]." I wanted to tell her to quiet down, but since I knew from the conversation that she had no problem swearing and yelling at her grandmother, that she had just gotten out of jail the day before, and that she was in a fighting mood, I thought I might get decked just for asking. Luckily she got off the phone after about 20 minutes and slept for the rest of the train ride.

And, er, I have to admit that I was the bad cell phone user last night. I need a big slap on the wrist. I was talking on the phone when I got on the bus for a twenty minute ride home (with no other stops for riders to get on).  When I got on, I was the only person on the bus, and I was sitting all the way in the back. The bus is pretty noisy, so it's not easy to hear other people, even if you're talking directly to them. (That's my feeble attempt at excusing my inexcusable behavior. But I know it was inexcusable.) Anyway, the phone conversation turned to issues of possible sterility, and whether my fiancee and I can have kids. (We don't want kids, so it's not really a problem). I was so engrossed in the conversation that I didn't realize somebody else had gotten on the bus (while we were still sitting at the curb before leaving) and had sat in the seat directly in front of me. When I got off the phone, I felt horrible, realizing that there was somebody in front of me who might have overheard the conversation! Because the bus is so noisy, I'm hoping she didn't hear it (as I said, it can be difficult to hear people when you talk directly to them), but I was also concerned that, because the bus was so noisy, I was talking louder than usual. Erp.

So, all of you who are annoyed at bad cell phone users, feel free to take your aggressions out on me. And although I oftentimes wonder what people are thinking when they have ultra-personal cell phone conversations in public, apparently sometimes people (i.e., me) just have temporary brain blip that causes them to forget where they are! :-[

I was at a professional meeting and between sessions there was the usual crowd in the ladies' room.  Someone's phone rang and they answered it, talking for just a minute or two.  After they completed the conversation, the lady in the next stall asked "What does cell phone etiquette for the bathroom say?  Do I wait to flush so the sound isn't in the background of your conversation, or does the fact that you answered the phone in the bathroom mean that you're comfortable enough with the person that you wouldn't mind them knowing you're talking while sitting on the pot?"
That drew laughs from everyone in the room.

Also, before cell phones were as widespread, when I was in undergrad there was a girl in my dorm who had her portable phone glued to her ear... walked down the hall, into the bathroom, did her business, flushed, and walked back down the hall (notice she didn't wash her hands afterwards because she was holding the phone!).   I had to wonder who she was talking to that she'd invite them into the bathroom stall with her.

I understand that when nature calls, you can't take a message... but at least put the person on the other line on hold!
