What do I wear?
jais:
I need your assistance! Im ashamed to admit it, but I've never been to a christening. My BF and I are flying from MN to AZ for his nephew's christening next Saturday. His mother said back during the holidays that it was to be quite casual, I had planned my wardrobe accordingly, today his mother called to let us know that his sister wanted him to wear a suit! What can I do that's tasteful, and neither over- nor under- dressed? I'm so embarassed and don't want to make a bad impression. Thank you. ???

I tried to type all of this before, but somehow lost it. I am a gastric bypass patient and have lost over 130lbs. My wardrobe is truly at a bare minimum of what I need for work (business casual) and my own time due to the fact that my sizes change quite quickly. I had initially planned on gray slacks and a sweater, but realize now this would look out of place with my BF in a suit. I'm not really big on dresses, but am willing to buy and wear one if the situation warrants it. I'm hoping to find something I may be able to blend in to my work wardrobe later, but understand if that just can't happen. I've tried asking his mom several times what she thinks I should wear, but she really doesn't give a straight answer.
Twik:
Wear "church wear". It's no longer required in most congregations that you wear a dress, but something that looks like you made an effort to dress up. The gray slacks should be fine, but maybe a nice blouse and a blazer instead of the sweater would dress it up slightly. Definitely if you're considering buying a dress, get one that is "business suitable", rather than "cocktail style".
FoxPaws:
Slacks might be too casual, but a skirt with a pretty sweater and jewelry would be perfectly appropriate. Personally, I think both Target and Wal-mart have some cute dresses and separates if you're in regular sizes, and they usually aren't very expensive
I was going to suggest staking out a church tomorrow to get some ideas, but as everybody in your neck of the woods will be bundled up in coats that won't be too helpful. ;)
ZipTheWonder:
I agree that the best choice here would be 'church dress.' Given what you said about how you plan to expand your wardrobe, maybe look over your blouses, sweaters and dress shoes -- and then choose a skirt that coordinates with something you already have.
