appaently staff doesn't get gifts (I'm being greedy and venty)

I mostly like my job.  And this is post is petty and venty...

Where I work, there is 'faculty' and there is 'staff'.  And there is a difference in how they are treated.
I'm staff.  (and I'm OK w/ that...even though I do a lot of 'faculty' jobs...funny rules there)

I just went down and checked my mail--there is a room with open mail boxes for all of the faculty and full-time staffers.  These aren't private, any 'mail' is out in public and it's impossible NOT to see in other boxes.  Every box had a stocking in it--except those boxes belonging to folks who get here early and already checked their mail. 
and except mine.

There are 5 or so other staff members who have boxes...3 of them have stockings--I'm not sure if they all got them and some have checked them and some haven't or if only some got them--I believe it's the latter.

I'm not going to say anything.  And I'm sure it was a 'token' gift.  And I'm sure it wasn't from the boss.  And I"m sure they were well meaning.

But come on people...If you're going to exclude people, try to be a bit more discreete--if these had been passed out at the faculty meeting or dropped by offices or what not, I wouldn't be pondering why everyone else got chocolate.

if a faculty member gave me anything other than a hard time i'd probably faint from shock.

in my old job the faculty took up a collection each holiday season and all the staff got a $100 bonus.

here the staff take up a collection for the housekeeping crew, who get a bonus.

faculty don't contribute, nor do they give the staff anything except attitude. no bonus for us b/c we are inferior lifeforms to our faculty. 

i'm going to the christmas party, but only to shove as much free booze as i can in my giant purse then take it home. why on EARTH would i want to socialize with these people off the clock?

But then again, I'd probably not go to it...that pesky 1-1/2 hour (each way) commute makes me a bit unsociable around here

You're not being greedy, you're feeling hurt because you were excluded. It's a natural human reaction.

Look on the bright side, this means you aren't a cyborg!

I think, just for this, I'm going to go buy me some M&Ms from the vending machine.
Because I think the stockings had chocolate.
and that's probably why I'm miffed.

Well if it makes you feel any better, probably no one will know that you were excluded.  They'll just assume that you picked up your stocking already.

Since some of the office staff received a stocking, ALL should receive a stocking.

WHO is responsible for this?   Your boss needs to make whoever is doing this aware that including some and excluding some is not only not polite but is just the kind of activity that plants seeds of dissatisfaction and dissention in an office.

I agree.  Based on the original post, it sounds like most people got stockings.  If you are going to buy stockings for most people, you should buy stockings for everyone.  It will not cost you much and you will avoid hurting anyone's feelings. 

If you only want to give a few people stockings or other gifts, you can do so privately and discreetly.

I was not invited to a calssmates party in third grade.

I am an adult.

I have big-girl panties on. Not pretty, but adult.

I have four children.

It still bugs me a teensy bit, every time my kids get party invitations, cause everyone else was, but me and another girl.

To this day I don't know why this kids mom allowed it and think it was horrible.

I know that not everyone is included on everthing, but come on people, you don't have to wave it under someone's nose like that. I agree, say something. You probably were not the only one excluded and not the only one hurt.

I think boss is developing a twitch due to unrelated things.  Boss is a wonderful person, but..."moody" sums it up.  It's taken me several years to realize the difference between "what?" and "WHAT?" in her voice...and right now, it's the latter.  So...since I want to NOT stress my lovely boss, I'm not bringing it up.

highly unlikely to be swiped.

If you're shorter than 5'6", you can't reach my mailbox (the tall folks get the top shelf  ) and mine isn't one you'd mistake for anyone else's.  And you have to have a key to access the room w/ mailboxes...

This was my first thought, too.  You mention that there's a division between faculty and staff, but go on to say that three of the five staffers had stockings.  I think someone just made a mistake when passing them out or someone grabbed yours.
