in my family the animals always get a dog/cat toy and some treats.

Butterbean kitty, however, prefers the loose wrapping paper to crinkle and attack and empty gift boxes to hide in to plan her next stealth attack on my feet.

Ha, my cats love noodles.  Cyclinder shaped pasta noodles, they like to bat them around and give chase.  A few pieces of penne may get thrown around or added to their toy box when we make pasta throughout the year, but for Christmas we buy a box for them at the fancy store.  Very wide, very colorful noodles with which to fill their stockings.

Do the pets give you gifts?   My purr-babies used to "buy" gifts for my Mom from their allowance.

No, I'm not crazy, it was a running joke.

My Mom would always say, "just get me something practical "     but I knew she loved pretty stuff. So "the cats" would get her beautiful and very impractical gifts while Hubby and I bought her stuff she could use. She's always complain, "Oh you spent too much" and I said, "No, Mom, the purr-babies got you that with their allowance, I didn't buy that!"   Then she would have to accept it.

My cats still buy my brother's "Santa Gifts", just as they have for the past 25 years.... okay, different cats, but same tradition.
