I bet someone somewhere has already rewritten the creeds.

I had a vision of the Apostles Creed reading "...He descended into Heck...", which reminded me of the Dilbert comic strip and Phil, the Prince of Insufficient Light, who darns you to Heck.

Wasn't Phil the one who carried the spoon instead of the pitchfork?

I can see maybe doing this if you belong to a church that attempts to incorporate many faiths. But then it seems a bit off to alter the songs of other faiths.

If it is a Christian church, I am quite confused. Virgin is not a dirty word. And being a Christian often involves going against society.

Why strike it from the record that the mother of Jesus was a virgin?  Makes it seem a little shameful, which is pretty odd, considering how many Christians are taught that all unmarried people should be virgins.

I absolutely think that 'political correctness' has a place in decent society.  We shouldn't use language that is hurtful or demeaning.  But, neither should we go out of our way to correct simple factual descriptions.   If you believe the story, Mary was a virgin.

She Who Didn't Know Joseph...Er...Biblically.

I'm just waiting now for them to rewrite the creeds, which quite obviously mention the Virgin.

No please don't, I enjoy having them memorized, sexist language and all. ::)

She Who Must Not Be Laid  >:D

That just CRACKED me up!

I am otherwise appalled at the idea that a church would bow to the ridiculousness of the PC. While I can see the argument that some terms might be offensive, to sanitize everything to please everyone is going way too far. Call it like you see it. If it's rude, then you are a rude person and should know better.

There was a line in a book I read as a kid. Don't remember the plot, title or author, just this line as delivered by an older aunt to a child when she said "darn". "Don't say darn if you mean d**m, and don't say d**m if you are a lady!"

I wonder how the other people in the group feel about it?  I would be asking that question and see just how quickly it can be changed back to the real words.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

OK, is this from a new hymnal?

Or has your choir master decided to rewrite the hymns? I would expect that at least half the people are going to sing the familiar lyrics...

How is "virgin" not PC? Wasn't that kind of the whole point of the story?

Because it makes reference to sex, and sex leads to dancing. ;)

This reminded me of something funny! I made advent coloring books for our sunday school kids. Page two had an obviously pregnant image of Mary with a verse about the angel visiting a virgin. I showed them to our pastor before handing them out (afraid they might be a bit too much lol) and she laughed and said "I LOVE the pregnant Mary!"

In all honesty I would sing the songs with the traditional words because I cannot make my brain remember the PC versions once it has memorized the originals. There are some things in our service where they changed "Him" to "God" - I say "Him" EVERY time because I just. can't. remember. until after it has passed and I think "oh crap, missed it again".
