For those who like to read computer screens, here is where you can get free reading of books whose copyright has expired in the US.  I'm sure it's got something for everyone.

I'm another Lililian Jackson Braun fan. In fact, I even have "The Cat Who..." cookbook, which has recipes for food mentioned in the books.

I like Braun's books because they are what I call "light mysteries," without too much gore. Other series that I like that fall in this genre:

The Melanie Travis mysteries by Laurien Berenson
The Mrs. Murphy books by Rita Mae Brown
The Hannah Swenson mysteries by Joanne Fluke (and these books include cookie recipes, since the main character is a baker)

I have that one here too (the cook book) has some pretty tasty sounding recipes in it

About The Cat Who.... Being "light mysteries" boy do I agree on that one.  In fact I think that she might be recyling a few plot lines. But I still read them, they are a great rainy day afternoon book.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who has gotten something like that. I completely nerded out and got the complete guide to Pern which included various recipes, some of which I tried. My first experiement with bubbly pies were very bubbly indeed. ;)

WHat a great list of books! Mr. Sweede and I looooove to read. We actually have to go through our collection and get rid of some.

Have any of you tried any books by Jasper Fforde? I read his Thursday Next serious and now he published two others that are in a series about the Nursery Crime division.
His books are about time travel and space travel - through books. The cops police the books and "real people" and fictional characters intereact. I thought it was very odd at first and now buy each one when it gets published in the UK and I live in the US - I pay Amazon to ship it to me so I don't have to wait for a US release.

I also love historical fiction so I read all of Edward Rutherford's books.

A Song of Ice and Fire, George R.R. Martin. I like these because they're a little more 'realistic' - at least as much as it's possible for fantasy to be realistic. Definitely a rare/low-magic setting, which doesn't crop up as often.

Oh, I love these books.  Although I just want to shake him and yell "Write faster, darn it!"

Melodrama, and here I wanted to shake him for the number of characters he was killing off. There's nothing wrong with it, but he seemed to like taking it to extremes, especially when you were just starting to like/get used to a character. :)

Besides Lackey, McCaffrey, King, Asimov, etc that I've read one of my favorites is Anne Bishop. Word of warning though, some of Bishop's stuff can be a little on the dark side, but is an excellent author.

Yay for Black Jewels (and Sebastian also rocked).  May the Darkness be with you :)

Oh, I just started reading this series!  I'm still looking for A Clash of Kings but I already have a copy of A Storm of Swords and A Feast for Crows.  I have to stop myself from reading A Storm of Swords.  I hope A Dance of Dragons gets published by next year  :)

Have you checked his site?  His other commitments are keeping him away from writing...  :'(

Delurking to chime in with some of my favorite worlds/authors.

I thought someone would chime in with Tamora Pierce before now.  I love the Circle of Magic/Circle Opens/Will of the Empress world, and also the Lioness quartet, Trickster's Choice/Queen, and Protector of the Small quartet. I feel very very dorky going into the teen section of the library (usually with baby in tow) to get them, but dorkiness be darned, I do it anyway.   ;D

Gareth Nix-Sabriel, Lirael, and the Abhorsen.  I love this world.  (Would love to run an game in it!)  Haven't been able to get past Monday in the Keys to the Kingdom series, though.  I should retry it.  Didn't like Ragwitch or the Tower books at all.

HP and Auel, of course.  The Anne of Green Gables books--Rilla of Ingleside is my go-to book when I need to cry and cry and cry and wallow in the crying.  Darkover, and Outlander, and King pre-Needful Things (quit reading Dark Tower at Wizard and Glass), McKinley (love Spindle's End, up to the end--I end up putting the book down about 20 pages before the end & just never pick it up again), Heinlein...

Oh, and thank you all for naming your faves!  I've kept a list I'm running to the library for. Whee!  New books!

I love so many, but let's see:

Anne McCaffrey's Pern series and Psychic series (Pegasus, The Rowan, Damia, etc.)

David Eddings' Belgariad and Malloreon series.  I also like the Elenium and Tamuli series, but I'll be the first to admit that they're not as good as the Belgariad and Malloreon series.  Jury's still out on the newest series and The Redemption of Althalus (one-book).

Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series through about book 5.  After that, it gets very unwieldly and doesn't start tying up loose ends until about book 10 or 11 (the latest).  He's sick, so I don't know if this series will ever conclude.

The Harry Potter series.

Katharine Kerr's Deverry series.

Katherine Kurtz's Deryni series.

Terry Brooks' Shannara series.

I guess some of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar and Bardic series.  (I don't think she's an especially good writer-the books are pretty good but IMHO they need a lot of editing to be as good as the others on this list.)

Stephen Donaldson's Mordant's Need series.  (I don't like the Thomas Covenant books.)

Jonathan Kellerman's Alex Delaware mystery series and Faye Kellerman's Peter Decker mystery series.  They are a married couple.  Their son Jesse recently put out a novel of his own.

Agatha Christie mysteries with Hercule Poirot.

Some of John Grisham.  I'm not wild about his newer stuff.

I'm away from sanity right now...please leave a message after the beep.

My problem is that I've read soooo much I tend to forget who I've read and who I haven't... Anyway, thought of a couple more authors I liked.

Guy Gavriel Kay - Excellent fantasy author, I loved Fionavar Tapestry (a trilogy set between "this" world and another) and Tigana. I haven't been able to find the rest of his books so I don't know how good they were, but they're probably worth checking out.

David Drake - Started off as a military sci-fi author but has since branched out to write fantasy as well. His Isles series is one of the better thought out series I've read, it technically could be considered rich in magic but the ones who go overboard usually get their butts bitten for it.

I know there's more authors I enjoy (Kerner is one of them, but someone else gave info on her. :) ) but I just can't remember who at the moment.
