The Mexicans are going to get you!

CreteGirl:
Ko-Ko's posting on being too PC made me post this story of what I overheard yesterday that definitely was not PC.

My DH, DS and I went to a border town in Mexico to do a little shopping.  All of the vendors have their wares out on the sidewalk for sale, and it is a very busy place.  While I was stopped at a booth looking at purses, there was another woman looking at purses as well.  She was with her husband and small son.  When she was done looking and ready to move on, she called loudly to her young son saying, "you'd better come with me, or the Mexicans are going to get you!"  Like they are the boogy man or something.

I could not believe how crass she was.

Some people have NO brains!

That reminds me of the time I was walking up the stairs from the subway.  Young cop was coming down the stairs and he smiled broadly at a young boy who was coming up the stairs with his dad, being very friendly.  Dad, on the other hand, left his brains at home.  He told his son, "See, if you misbehave, that policeman is going to arrest you!"

I felt so bad, the look on the young police officer's face was so sad, he looked wounded to the core.

I wish people would THINK before they speak.  Really, I do.

No brains, no class, no thought beyond the next nanosecond.

Dear Abby or somebody printed a letter not long ago from a nurse who was disturbed that a parent said to her child "If you don't behave I'll tell the doctor to give you a shot."  This could give someone medical phobias.  This parent is equally guilty of possibly making a child afraid of the police.

As for the xenophobe, I can't type out what I'm thinking because I'd get banned from this board.

I now live in the Midwest, but most of my life before was spent WAY down South, when times were at least TRYING to change.

We lived in farm country, and had quite a few neighbors of Mexican or American Indian descent.   Our little church was warm and friendly and so they all began to come to services---one of the ladies was a wonderful addition to our choir, and every one seemed neat and respectable and kind.  The children were on their best church behavior, and were a delight to have in the Sunday School classes.

Several there-from-the-dawn-of-Time families were, however, not any of the nice attributes above.   They were rowdy families, and had certain lifestyle and hygiene habits which made them unpleasant to be around.   One woman in particular was especially loud, brash, occasionally-unwashed and ignorant of all manners and graces.   Her husband and children were not far from the tree, as well.

One Summer during the annual week of Revival Services, the church was really  packed.   There were such  crowds that the men had brought lots of chairs from the Sunday School rooms and arranged them in the big space just inside the front doors, adding several rows behind the pews.

I was running late after work, so the children drove on to church and I drove alone; I slipped into the next-to-last row of chairs.   After the service was over and people began filing out, Miz Loudmouth sidled up to me with a smirk on her face.   She gestured to the several young Mexican men just behind me in the row.

She grinned, glitter-eyed, and said, "Ain'cha fraid you'll getcha thote cut?" :o

Translate that at your peril, Dear E-Hellions---maybe your dismay and disgust won't last as long as mine has.

The grocery store in my neighborhood shopping center closed some time ago but the building was sold to a new company and has been renovated.  It should be mentioned that the old store, part of a large grocery chain, had lost a lot of business because it had become dark, dirty, crowded with displays in the aisles, the produce and meat quality had deteriorated and it was not a nice place to shop.

The new owner is also a chain but it is an *ethnic* market as well as a full scale *regular* grocery. They have a full bakery, large prepared food take out department, a butcher counter with real butchers who serve you from a real meat case, an amazing produce department and an eat-in lunch area.  The place is colorfully decorated with lively music playing.  It's quite upscale and a huge improvement over the old store. I think it's a real asset to the neighborhood.

There's a nice nail salon in the same shopping center.  The owners and all of the staff are Vietnamese.
I was there one day when the conversation among some of the patrons turned to the prospective new market.  One woman asked the salon owner if they knew when it would finally open.  Before she could answer Ms. Rudie Biggot jumped into the conversation with a diatribe about how she wished it would never open at all, she had fought the permit with the city planning commision, it was going to ruin the neighborhood by attracting *those people*, property values were going to go down, America was going to hades because of all these foreigners coming in and taking away business and jobs...yada..yada...yadda.  She was apparently oblivious to the fact that the woman literally sitting at her feet, patiently painting tiny flowers on her toenails is, in fact, a foreigner, as are all of the other techs there. The ignorant American rears her ugly head!!!!!  She would be pitiable if she weren't so offensive.

I wonder if she'd change her opinion if she knew what kinds of jobs these refugees had held in their native country.  There are among them a midwife, a math teacher, an accountant, an aesthetician, a businessman etc.  They escaped with practically nothing, came here not speaking English and had to find a way to make a living.  They've overcome a lot, work hard and contribute to society and the economy.

The new grocery store employs over a hundred of *those people*.  Boy do they hustle!

Too bad that Ms. Rudie Biggot can't see past her own ignorance and prejudice.
