Dress Code Question
« on: January 30, 2007, 09:44:18 AM »
A magazine I do business with has invited me to a fashion show next week.  I've never been to one and have no clue what to wear.  Nor do I want to embarrass myself by asking my sales rep.  The particulars are:

Location:  Midtown Manhattan
Time:   6:30-10PM
Cocktails will be served

Here is one of the featured designers' spring collection:

ETA somehow everything I wrote got erased - sorry! I dont know exactly what is appropriate, but I would tend to go with more dressy/professional than casual.

And I also think that it is better to ask, since dress code can vary widely, than show up in something that isnt appropriate.

good luck!

I rarely watch fashion shows, but from the glimpses I've caught on TV, I've concluded that the commentators who rave about the latest styles will never be caught dead actually wearing them.

A typical (female) designer wears nice black slacks, a black blazer, and either a crisp white cotton shirt or a black turtleneck. You might prefer a business suit, since it's a business invitation.

I think a cocktail dress would be appropriate. Maybe a "little black dress" paired with a black blazer?

Looks like a rather mainstream rather than cutting-edge designer, so I think you are fine to wear "business evening," but you might as well look as sharp as possible. Do you have an "interesting" suit? i.e. something designery with a bit of panache in the cut or fabric? (Moschino, Vivienne Westwood, Christian Lacroix?)Wear it with a low-cut sweater or silk shirt.

Ok I don't live in New York and have never been to a show but I love fashion.  Since you are going with a magazine find a black suit (bet you already have one) and wear a stricking top under it.  Not a button down but something in a bold color or print.  Then wear some interesting jewlrey and add Very tall heels and you will blend in great with the magazine people.

And by the way I am so seriously jealous.

I second the Little Black Dress/black suit.  It is the one thing that's never out of style.

Chiming in to POD the black dress with blazer or black suit.  Adding classy pumps, simple, classic jewelry, and a fun stylish bag :)

I definitely have to wear my highest heels for this.  I might spend Saturday afternoon looking for a new jacket, though.

Another vote for the little black dress, it's hard to wrong with that. Plus, it's easy to jazz up with accessories.

I'm jealous!  I would go for the little black dress / black suit with high heels and good jewelry (seems to be the consensus!).
