ShadesOfGrey:
The other thread got me thinking about this.  There were mitigating factors in that situation (not actually holding the item, having a kid guard it, etc.) but what say you to this situation below?

I often shop alone.  Let's say I want something that I cannot pick up (size/weight/position), so I go find a sales clerk to get it for me.  In the meantime, someone else has seen same item, and would also like it. They attempt to get a sales clerk, or attempt to get it themselves (being stronger/taller than me  ;)).  I come back with sales clerk while they still are trying to get to the item.

What should happen?

I understand this is a minor issue, but am just curious about everyone's opinions on this...

Honestly, I think whoever gets it first should have it. So if you walk back and said person is in the process of loading it onto his cart, etc... sorry, you missed the boat. It's one of the hazards of shopping alone (which I ALWAYS do, lol).

If you and other person get back with salespeople at the same time? Time to flip a coin :)

NOVA Lady:
In that case I do think you'd have a claim to the item because you were alreadying taking the first step to making the item yours. I think the best thing to do is to politely and gently tell the person that you are purchasing the item, "Oh, I'm so sorry I've already grabbed this sales clerk to help me get this item to the check out" and see what their reaction is from there.

I do think this is a different situation then the other thread. You know the exact item you want and are doing the best you can to claim it as yours (getting a clerk)

ShadesOfGrey:
Hmm, I can see it from both perspectives posted here..

As I posted in the "Dibbs" thread, I also shop alone (in general).

When I know that I will be looking at bulky things, I bring a pad of sticky notes and talk to the store manager about using them to place a "brief hold" sign (if I need to ask someone some questions) or even a "sold" sign on it (if I know that I'm going to buy it and just need help getting it to the register).  Every time I've asked, the answer was either "yes" or "no, but [insert name of nice salesperson here] would be happy to take a look with you and answer some questions/help out."

Otherwise, I agree with the "whomever has it first in their hands."  Sometimes that's just how it is (that, and I don't get too riled up over material things anyway.  Stuff is stuff.).
