Questionable cream
« on: December 07, 2006, 03:01:56 PM »
I purchased a couple of gift baskets at a silent auction, thinking that they would be good "emergency" gifts for showers, birthdays, etc.  (The spare gifts thread started me thinking about this).  One of the baskets is fine- a candle, a photo album, a mug, etc.  The other one is a "spa" basket.  The basket contains several different relaxation products and lotions.

And a rather large tube of anti-cellulite cream.

I'm afraid that if I gift this basket to someone, they will be offended at my apparent commentary on their cellulite.  The basket is open-air, so I could take it out, but it seems skimpy without the lotion.  Should I replace it with something less offensive, or am I reading too much into it?

I would probably dump it and replace it with a pretty lotion. Especially as it's a "last minute gift" and most likely isn't going to someone you've known for years. These days you just never know who is and isn't going to take that personally.

I however will gladly take it as I can use all the help I can get!  ;D

I think the fact that you saw it as an implication would be enough reason to remove it.  Replacing it is at your discretion, but it sounds like you'd feel more comfortable that way.  Maybe a gift certificate would fill in nicely, although I'd try to keep it as general as possible.  I know a ton of people have allergic reactions to scented lotions.

CRUD MONKEYS!, they made a GIFT BASKET with ANTI-CELLUTILE cream in it...why not thrown in some feminine hygien spray, mouth wash and deodorant, a couple of pairs of odar eaters and a sign that says "I am beautiful on the INSIDE".

OK, sorry, yes, it may offend, I would replace it with a nice scented lotion or some "spa socks" or "spa gloves"

The allergy question had occurred to me as well...thanks for the advice!

I'm highly sensitive to Bath & Body Works....which makes me want to cry whenever I think about it.  But, it's bad to the point that I just had a customer come in, and her lotion had to be from there because my eyes have been itching and nose running ever since.   Anyway, that's why I think of stuff like that.  Most people like scents, but it's usually safer to let them pick out their own.

If this is for a gift that you didn't anticipate having to give anyway, I don't think the receiver gets any say in whether or not the lotion is scented.  If they don't like the scent or can't use it, they say thank you for the gift, take it home, and re-gift or get rid of it.  Pick something reasonably neutral (vanilla instead of "Carribean mango walnut spruce") that's the right size, and go with it.

Wow, I'm sure glad I'd chosen to take a small bite of cheese instead of a swig of Mountian Dew.  I can't imagine having to explain a sticky monitor to our IT guy!!

That's HILARIOUS!!!!!!!!

ETA:  OP: I'd go the gift certificate route or the neutral-scented-same-size-bottle lotion.  You could also pick up an unscented shimmer lotion too if you don't want to give scented.  OR you can toss in a bottle of wine, a bath pillow, or something else that would mesh well with the other contents, but not be beauty (or lack thereof? LOL!) related.
