Rude, condescending dentist! Yikes!
« on: February 01, 2007, 12:01:47 AM »
 :-\

I just got back from the dentist today, after having an extraction. Normally, I'd be in physical pain, but right now, I'm emotionally and physically numb after being treated like a lowlife moron by the dentist himself, and the technician! Why? For questioning his "treatment plan" (all sorts of expensive treatments he wants me to do.) He lured me in by being nice the first tooth worked on, but then when I came in for another tooth to be done, he started coming up with elaborate extra costs, etc. I question anything when it comes to add-ons in dentistry, just so I know what is going on before I agree to it. To him, he was angry and insulted that I would dare say no, and not do what I was told. He wanted to do a bunch of other things to my teeth before doing what I wanted, a dental implant to replace the tooth pulled today, near the front of my mouth. I know some things are important, but having a gap near the front of my mouth is up there in importance, too, to me. I told him I will do both, but WILL have the implant put in while doing the other things, just not in the order he wanted. He tried scaring me with all sorts of reasons why I should do everything on the long list of dental expenses first, ignoring my questions. When I stood firm, he blew up and started bellowing at me, accusing me of not listening to HIM! He followed me out, barking at me, for not being pleased with his treatment of me. I am in shock and feel hurt, at the condescending, mean behavior inflicted at me for wanting something done that deviated from what he wanted. I'm the one paying the money, so whether he likes it, my opinion should count.

So, I am never going back to that guy. On my way out, I told the secretary (who heard him - as did everyone else, since he was yelling -  try to chew me out), "If I treated my sales clients like he just treated me, then I would be out of a job. That is not proper treatment of a client." She wanted to schedule more work done on my teeth, yeah, right. Nope, I told her I needed to go and left. Has anyone else been manhandled by their dentist for simply questioning things, yet the doctor didn't want to listen? This blows my mind. I thought they were all respectful and compassionate, guess not.

Still in shock but doing better..

Report him to your state board.  This is not the way a dentist should act.

If you have insurance you can report him to your insurance company.

You can usually get information on your state Dental Board on-line at your state site or even from your insurance company.

That is an excellent idea, thank you. I never thought of it, yes, he is a dentist on the insurance company's list. They sure wouldn't like their clients being bullied like that. Will contact them tomorrow :)

So, if he's on the insurance, he can see lots of un-neccesary work to do for XXX amount of money.

Your insurance would love to know about this guy.

Absolutely report him to state dental board AND insurance company. You might also want to check out local Better Business Bureau or local Chamber of Commerce group, he may belong to one or both. This behavior is unprofessional and very rude. I have friends who are faculty in dental school and dental hygienist program - if any students acted like this to their patients in school, they would be tossed out of school before they knew what happened!
Did you know that DENTISTS are the one group of health care professionals whose income has gone up dramatically in the last few years? The good friend who is a dental school faculty member shared this fun fact! They make plenty of money, this is greed.
Another fun fact: dentists are one of the groups of health care professionals at highest risk for substance abuse -sometimes from misuse of drugs they have easy access to because of their profession. Erratic or unprofessional behavior can sometimes be the result of drug or alcohol use.
HOpe you can find a NICE , professional dentist.

I absolutely feel you pain.  This is rather vain, but I had always had perfect teeth at this point in my life. My last dentist I loved totally and he always commented on how perfect my teeth were.

Dentist retired and I changed insurance so I had to go to somebody I didn't know or had recommendations for.

All of a sudden on my first treatment (which should have been for a cleaning but was just an initial check, where I had to pay full price and pay for x-rays even though it had been less than a year since my last x-rays and I had them sent over) decided that my bite was not in line and ground two of my teeth down before he even told me what he was doing. Then charged me an additional $100 above and over my insurance for this.

I was so mad I cried all the way back to work, but I immediately reported him to the insurance company and switched dentists. Not only did I get a personal apology letter from the dentist but a personal check from him for $100.

Call tomorrow.

Hello,

I agree with you. I have had many bad experiences with dentists.  One time I spent a fortune having crowns redone with a specialist. It required several visits and I was subjected to him complaining about the amount of work involved and criticising me every time.  In the meantime he had numerous pictures displayed of his fancy boat and summer house in the office.  It really irked me that he dared criticize me when he is making so much money off of my teeth.

Manhandled?  If he manhandled you, isn't this assault and battery?  I hope you filed a police report and also reported him to his association.
And, Speaking for myself, I would fire him on the spot and in so many words.  Yep, when he is working on my mouth I am employing his services and have that right.  No way would I sit in a chair with this guy shoving sharp mechanical instruments into my mouth.  I can only hope the waiting room was full as he walked out behind you, shouting and whatever else he was going.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

My old dentist in Ohio would get huffy with me and try to tell me dire consequences if I didn't let him pull my wisdom teeth, which were giving me no trouble whatsoever.  It wasn't as bad as OP's dentist, but still made me feel uncomfortable.

I love my dentist now-as much as possible  :P- and I still have those teeth.

I lucked out recently by happening upon the best dentist ever! His name, honest to goodness, is Dr Powers. I had a dental emergency, he saw me, with no insurance, extracted the tooth, prescribed the required meds, and let me know that the pharmacy down the street was cheaper than the office pharm. He also gave me a list of treatments he wanted me to have once my dental insurance finally kicked in so that if I chose to go with a different dentist, or get a second opinion, I would know exactly what he wanted to do, and what his prices were.  He also gave me alternatives for permenent and temporary fixes, weighing the benefits of an extraction against a root canal, and many other things.
I love Dr Powers, and he will even see my kids, too!

My previous dentist, on the other hand, was the root of all evil! I have some very, very, crooked bottom teeth, braces did not fix them, the roots are growing crossways. Oral surgery, or extraction and a partial denture are the only way these will be taken care of. Evil dentist told me that my teeth were only so crooked because I was too fat! He also told me that I was lieing about not being able to floss in between two of them (when all my other teeth were nicely flossed, why would I skip flossing just between these two), tried to do it himself, and ended up getting a sliver of floss caught in my gums..minor surgery to remove. He would show up late for appointments, always insisted that if I had a morning appointment I not eat first, so he wouldn't have to smell any lingering food odors, and was just a general A&&.

When I finally realized that I had a spine, I reported him to the insurance company, the dental board, the BBB and anyone else I could get to listen. My report was the final one needed to pull his dental liscence in the state, and he no longer practices in MN.

Wow. Experiences like yours boggle my mind.

I am 100% in agreement with the posters suggesting you report him to the state board, your insurance company, and the BBB.

My mother got something similar because her tongue was hurting.  Jerkweed basically told her her tongue was fat, and to deal with it.  She has since gone to another dentist, or was it ENT? that gave her a simple solution.

I had my wisdom teeth removed last christmas. I have full coverage insurance but he said i had to pay $300 for anesthetic. I did that but now I'm being billed $350 MORE and have been harrassed about it ever since. I refuse to pay since they refuse to tell me what it is for.
