They were annoyed with me for that, too. They did a decent job on the tooth, so I overlooked the rudeness at that time. But now, with his following me out and yelling at me for not being grateful and happy with his (incredibly unfriendly and hostile) service, nope, won't be back. I am so scared about going to find another dentist, it was my fault for choosing this guy..chose him from a list on my insurance (yes, I reported him to the insurance company via email but they haven't contacted me back yet about it). My mouth hurts from the extraction yesterday, but I'm not going to call the office to ask for the painkillers and antibiotics he "forgot" to give me. Heck will freeze over first. Will just take the pain on this one and learn from it.
I just love when their mistakes are YOUR fault. @@@

Don't just tolerate the pain. Defiitely try your regular doctor for it, and when you're looking for a new dentist try cross-referencing your insurance company's list with a Google for any comments you can find about the person. You can try cross-referencing with the 1-800-dentist people, too, but I don't know how I feel about a service the dentist pays to be listed with, and I think that's how it works.

I've had my own dental nightmare the past month or so, starting with an old gold inlay that "popped" when I was being good and flossing. They were kind enough to glue that back in, hoping it would hold until an appointment, but it popped again within 24 hours. It's pretty cool when your new dentist looks at your old dentist's work with admiration and compliments (I must email her and let her know!).

So they drilled some more and put on a temporary crown that (naturally) popped a week before the permanent crown was ready, so there's another morning wasted as a walk-in for yet another re-cementing, this time afraid it would be hard to pop the temp so we could put the permanent on.

I have a horrible case of bruxism and have had a night guard for nearly two decades now, so in my case I HAVE to have gold for crowns because it has a better chance of standing up to me. The last thing I need is extra visits to "the chair!"

Buck up! Unfortunately dental stuff seems to go in spurts--in fact, EVERY adult member of my family has had a major dental problem in the past two months. It's like all our teeth decided to disintegrate simultaneously.

I am very, very lucky!   I had gone to a dentist 10 years ago for a root canal, I went to him as his ad said "Safe and gentle"    NO he was NOT!  I walked out of there in extreme pain and looked like I had just lost a prise fight.   He had gripped my jaw so hard that he bruised the whole right side of my face.    On top of that..... he did the root canal on the wrong tooth, which fell out the next day!

I was so terrified, I didn't go to a dentist again til last June.    I found the dentist I have now by getting a list of providers from the insurance Co, and I called the one who I knew where the office was.   I AM SO LUCKY He is wonderful.   It turned out I had to have all my upper teeth removed and I have an upper plate.... which my permanent one is still being worked on as my dentist is a perfectionist... I like that.  I also need a bridge for the lower front, but we're waiting for the insurance year to roll over (in a month or so) before we do that.    But my dentist explained everything to me, and my husband, went over the costs, and the treatment plan.... and he is nice, with a sense of humor, and I have NEVER had any pain from any of the work he has done.

My teeth were in really bad shape, but my dentist never made fun of me, or made me feel uncomfortable about it.   He just makes me feel so comfortable, and I love the fact that he is so fussy and wants my new smile to be perfect and not cause me any pain.    Oh, and I also just adore his staff, too.... they are wonderful!

I really got lucky when I picked that number to call!

Yeah, my teeth have disintegrated simultaneously within the last ten years, yikes. Mom has lousy teeth and so did grandma (her mom). And me, well, let's just say that I'm going to spend a small fortune replacing each and every tooth eventually, with posts and crowns. My teeth are really bad. This idiot dentist saw $$ signs when he looked in my mouth, and every other word out of his mouth was "It's going to be expensive". Duh.

I just talked to my insurance company, since nobody replied to my email there, and they are sending me paperwork to file a formal complaint. They were horrified when I told them details and told me that they take these things very seriously. Good. The phone customer care person told me he could hear in my voice the hurt this has caused! Wow, I'm glad I didn't work today, since I work on the phones myself, taking incoming sales calls. If I sound "down" I won't sell anything. So, today I am taking off work, and recuperating. Just need to unwind. Pictures of the dentist freaking out at me flash through my head, but I am pushing the thoughts aside because it's over now..and he is not going to hurt me further!

Be proud that you stood up for yourself and stopped going to that dentist!  So many times people just keep going back for more.
I had an opthamologist who was not as bad as your dentist, but when he kept shining those bright lights in my eyes I naturally have a hard time keeping my eyes open.  I felt he was yelling at me too much about that...in fact I was sort of upset each time I went there...so I switched.

What a terrible way to treat a patient!  It's totally uncalled for and you are absolutely correct when you stated that anyone else would lose their job if they treated a client like that.  I guess some dentists feel that they are above reproach because of their position.

I too have been treated badly by dentists.  I have had two incidents that left me feeling frustrated, hurt and angry.  This shabby treatment was from two different dentists but were equally upsetting.

The first incident happened several years ago.  As an owner of a small business I do not have dental coverage so any costs come straight out of my pocket.  Dental fees can be extremely expensive depending on the work you need done and I don't always have the money to afford these procedures.  I went to the dentist about a tooth that had been bothering me and he informed me that there were several teeth that needed to be worked on.  I told him that I didn't have dental insurance and asked him if we could work out a payment plan and work on one tooth at a time so it would be more affordable.  He agreed that we could do this but I'd have to have a "new patient examination" first.  I agreed, had the examination (which cost over $100) and he informed me that as he had a cancellation the next day, we could see me to get the work started to which I agreed.

The next day I go to see him, he freezes me and then proceeds to do his thing.  Hours later he finishes and I go to the receptionist to pick up my bill.  The receptionist types up the information and then says, "Okay, try not to faint when you see the bill."  I immediately get nervous thinking it must be a couple of hundred dollars of work he's done.  She hands me the bill and saw it was for over $700.  I left the office in a daze.  This was after I had repeatedly told him that I wanted to do a payment plan because I didn't have the money to do all the work at one time.  I couldn't feel what he was doing to my teeth as my mouth was frozen and now I'm stuck with a huge bill.  I swear I cried the rest of the day.

The whole kicker of it was that one of the fillings he gave me fell out a couple of months after and I had to get another dentist to fix it (I never did go back to that particular dentist obviously) so I ended up paying for the same thing twice.

The next incident involved my new dentist.  I went to see him about a tooth that had a fairly large cavity and needed a filling.  He again noticed some other work that needed to be done and when I mentioned that it would have to be put off as I don't have dental insurance he got quite snappy and said, "You can't afford to fix a tooth but I bet you have four tires on your car".  Um...yeah...I need that car to get to work so I can pay you for the work you do on my teeth you bloody idiot.  I was extremely offended but kept my mouth shut.  This is the same dentist who insisted my son needed a retainer (at $400) and then later when it fell out and I took my son in to see him about the lost retainer, he then stated that I need not worry as he didn't really need it.  Good god!D

I also hope that you complain to the board of dentistry. I wish I had done that when Iwas abused by a dentist.

I mentioned in my previous post that you should complain to the dentistry board. What state are you in?

I don't think he will lose his license but it will cost him some time having to respond to the board on this.   I actually complained once to a medical board when I mistreated in a doctor's office. I knew that he wouldn't lose his license but would have to give a response to the board.

I reported him to my insurance company, and gave him bad reviews online, where he has ads saying they do "sedation dentistry" (yet, when I asked for nitrous oxide for oral surgery they said they only use novacaine, and don't offer gas at all). So, that was a lie. Also, they say that he is 'warm and caring, catering to cowards", again, a lie. I'm a coward, though I've spent most of my life going to dentists to have teeth filled, etc (my teeth are bad, I know it). He belittled and talked down to me when I'd get scared, as he shoved the novacaine needle in my mouth, and when I still felt pain as he began to drill, he got annoyed and told me that I am the ONLY patient he's had in fifteen years that needed extra novacaine for this procedure. He said, "It won't be pretty, I will have to inject the roof of your mouth with a big needle, and it will hurt". Yeah, this is a caring, and gentle dentist..not! I can see being honest, but not like that, he is too brash and abrupt.

He's full of crap!  When I was home in Calgary for Christmas, I went to my dentist because it's cheaper for me to go see him than it is to use my insurance here in the US.  I had an appt for cleaning, xray and checkup.

Imagine my surprise when he said I had a cavity!  I haven't had one in about 15 years, so I was a bit nervous of the needle.  We were joking with each other because we grew up next door to each other and I used to babysit him, so it's kind of funny that he's poking around in my mouth.  He laughed at me when I pulled away and was nervous about the needle.  All in fun.

So, get the first needle.  Nothing froze.  Gave me a second one.  Still nothing.  He finally had to inject directly into my jawbone to get it to freeze.  He said that if it's close to the root (or something to that effect) that the novacaine in the normal spot doesn't normally work.  So, I had THREE shots of novacaine to get it to finally freeze.

At the end of the procedure, his assistant told me there was no charge for the service.  I was shocked as I didn't expect him to give me a deal let alone not charge me at all as it would have cost me far less there than it would with my insurance coverage here in the US!  He gave me a check up, xrays and the filling.  The only thing I was charged for was the cleaning which was $100 Cdn.

So, your dentist is full of doo doo - big time.

Wow, you also got put through the abusive dentist "wringer", your situation sounds similar to mine. I have insurance but pled poverty, to keep him from seeing too many dollar signs. My mouth is full of work to be done, and when he started talking money, he also noticeably became more abrupt, harsh and forceful. I overheard him saying to someone about his "other business", on the side, and can see this guy is all about money by the way he thinks and talks. He double schedules patients, sometimes triple schedules, because when he works on me, he stops and spends a half hour in the room next door doing something to someone else, then one time I heard  him also give a consultation to yet another patient, as myself and another patient were in the other treatment rooms (thin walls, can hear right through them). He is greedy and even told me, "I thought you said you couldn't afford.." I told him, "I CAN afford to do this and that, but I'm not going to just indiscriminately give you money for everything on this list. I will do what I choose to do, and at the same time, budget in to have the dental implant done, too." He told me "You just don't understand, you aren't listening, you need ALL of this work done first." I told him, "No, YOU aren't listening to me, I'm not stupid, I know I need the work done, but also I WILL have the implant done within all of this, because I will not do this entire list of work before having the implant. I just won't." He sat there rolling his eyes, then I mentioned how my employer wouldn't tolerate me treating others this way, so he stalked off to one of his other rooms to get away. He can't handle the truth, only in bullying patients out of money if they hesitiate to do what he says. If I didn't do anything but have cosmetic work done before important dental needs, then he makes even more money off me for more implants, so why is he that upset? He likes power, and to not be questioned. It's all about control, in his warped existence.

I'm in the state of Florida (Largo area). Ironic that you mention this, because I just got off the phone with them, they don't go after dentists who are rude or have "bad bedside manner" but told me to fill out the complaint form anyway, and if they can do anything for me, they will contact me. I guess filing it is better than nothing. They are sending me the papers in the mail.

Oh I SO have a story for this one.  Sorry it's kind of long.

I had been unemployed for over a year, and after a very hard and constant search finally got a job (my current one).  My insurance kicked in right before this happened, too, which was fortuitous.  Since I had no money, and no dental insurance on my last job (from which I got laid off just as I had got caught up), I hadn't been to the dentist in a very long time.

I had a cavity.  I knew it, but could do nothing.  The charitable organizations in this town that had dental care as part of their programs told me all they could do was pull it; they wouldn't do a filling. (Huh?) I didn't want that, and I was holding out until I had a job and could pay for it.  My parents were basically paying my essential bills by this time, as my unemployment had run out, and I didn't want to ask them for money for a dumb tooth.  So I lived on Anbesol until I could get in to see someone, for some time after I got my job.

One night I was eating a Quiznos sandwich and *CRACK* the tooth broke in half.  It stayed in my mouth but was broken all the way up.  I called my boss the next morning and told her I had to go to the dentist, and I wouldn't be in.  She recommended I go to her dental office, and told me they were very nice.  I immediately called and they got me in that morning.  The dentist was very young, and his diploma said "Class of 2003." Classless is more like it, and you’ll see why.  Well, he looked at the x-rays, and had the sense to say he wouldn't touch it, because my root was all curled up in my jaw.  He sent me to an oral surgeon, and I got the tooth pulled that day.

Classless of 2003 had recommended I come see him and get some more work done, because I had cavities adjacent to the lost tooth that would need attention.  I called and got another appointment.  There must have been some miscommunication in the office, because when I came in, he thought I was just in to be evaluated, not worked on.  I said, uh-uh, this appointment was to fix these cavities.  He sniffed, but agreed.

While the technician and I were waiting for him to come in, I was looking at a local magazine that had a spread about Italian food.  We were commenting on the pictures of delicious-looking food.  When he came in, he asked what we were looking at and when we told him, he said, “Oh, Eye-talian? Is that what they call a wop?”  I WAS SPEECHLESS.  The technician and I just looked at each other.

During the procedure, Classless had to put some water in my mouth, and he told me not to swallow.  The technician squirted it in rather forcefully, and some of it got past me and I choked.  I turned my head to the side and coughed the water out; unfortunately, where Classless was sitting.  He jumped and snapped, “That was uncalled for!” Excuse me? I was DROWNING!  Anyway, you’re a dentist! You don’t want to get spit on, be a psychiatrist.   I mumbled, “Isowwwwwyy” as best I could through the Novocain.  I knew it wasn’t my fault, but I was humiliated.  And angry.

After I left, I wrote an email to the dental office, detailing his behavior.  I told them that the repairs he had done on my teeth were satisfactory, but his behavior (especially the ethnic slur) wasn’t and that I didn’t want him to touch me again.  They wrote back that he had been reprimanded, and had apologized, and that my case was assigned to another dentist if I wished to return.

I haven’t been back yet, and I need to have a cleaning.  I think I will give the other guy a chance.  But Classless? I hope he learned a lesson.    ::)

I just made an appointment with another dentist
« Reply #43 on: February 02, 2007, 05:36:36 PM »
After talking to coworkers, I found a dentist who is in the same complex as the abusive dentist, but has been there a long time and has a devoted following. My coworker's husband is a doctor and highly recommends him. And when I called the office to make an appointment, I told the receptionist what I'd just been through with the other dentist, and told her his name. She said they have a lot of their clients have come to them after being mistreated by this man, and that he has a reputation of being, well, mean. She apologized for the abuse I endured, and told me that they are kind and friendly at their office. They will work with me on the money part (they don't carry my insurance plan so it's all coming out of my pocket), and they have sedation (nitrous oxide). What I was hoping for all along, supportive people. She said she will try to get my xrays from the former dentist's office, she said if they'll let her get them. I told her, "They WILL let you get them, let me know if they don't. I will make sure that you get those records." She was nervous about calling over there, so even people who work in offices are uncomfortable dealing with the guy's office. I told her the receptionist is very kind, she said she'd heard that, too, from others. Hopefully, there won't be any trouble getting the xrays, which were just taken. I hope I don't have to go back there and get them myself, but I will if I need to. It's all a step in the right direction, anyhow :)

Oh my goodness!  What horrible stories.  Y'all have got me scared to death.  Fortunately, I have a lovely dentist.  On my first visit, I filled out a questionnaire that let him know just how afraid I was and how much was I willing to pay to keep my teeth healthy (basically, everything I have, or 'just pull them all and let's get dentures!').  He introduced me to his entire staff, who are all lovely, friendly people, and his work is just so gentle and considerate that for the first time in my life, I actually enjoy going to the dentist!  I'm just as much of a coward as you folks are, but I'm more afraid of losing my teeth, so I went to dentists regularly ALWAYS.

He carries NO insurance, so anything I get done has to go through the out-of-network filter, but so far it's been pretty good.  He allows me to make payments when necessary.  He's saved at least 3 teeth that were cracking from the silver fillings, and replaced a gold crown that I've had since my 20s, and made me a mouth guard so I'll stop grinding my teeth down, and replaced every silver filling I have with the bonded ones that cost more but save the teeth better (they don't crack the teeth).  Whew.  I love this man.  I love his whole office.  I moved away, and will travel 60 miles to go back to him for cleanings.  It's not painless, physically, and never will be (I'm sensitive), but he honestly tries. He's always up on the latest and greatest treatments.

Did you know that I have a bridge and two crowns, all gold, and I've never had a root canal?  They're all on LIVE teeth.

Now my sister is a different story. I'll tell hers later, but it involves pulling teeth, years of braces, and finally having her jaw *removed* and rebuilt.  The poor girl is a train wreck, but not her oral surgeon's fault. He's wonderful, even if he does look like Weird Al.  heehee
