Well, I have to say the situation rarely arises, but usually I just wipe discreetly. If the problem is that I'm bunged up I use a decongestant spray or just wait until it goes away! Since it isn't snot (sorry) that causes the bunged up feeling, I've never understood the benefit of nose-blowing! Crazy, I know  ;)

As an aside, I am 21 years old and I have never ever ever blown my nose in my life and I don't intend to. If I can help neither will any future children of mine! For some reason it absolutely grosses me out, and I really can't believe that it provides enough health benefit for it to be worth the effort!
I'm not sure where I got this idea, but I've come to learn that actually being able to access and use oxygen has some minor health benefits. Someone even went to far as to say that oxygen is vital to support human life. When the body parts primarily responsible for transporting oxygen into and out of my body are plugged it becomes necessary to unplug them, one way or another. Blowing my nose serves this purpose.

Mouth breathing disgusts me far more than nose blowing, and I've had to do that on plenty of occasions. Being dead from lack of oxygen creeps me out more than both of those put together.

I'm incredibly sensitive when it comes to grooming in public (probably oversensitive, actually).

I am, too.  So my general rule is, whatever you need to do, do it in a bathroom or something.

Kathrynne - I think that response was unecessarily snarky.
If blowing your nose works for you, fair enough. I said it creeps me out but I also said that it was because I am oversensitive about it.
I'm sorry if my choice offends you.

I really don't see what was snarky about her response. She was just explaining what worked for her and wasn't being snarky to you.

Perhaps then I am being oversensitive in general!
I just sensed a sarcastic tone in the part about 'accessing and using oxygen'.
But then that is the danger of posting online - one never really can tell anothers true tone or meaning!

It wasn't snarky. It was, however, a direct response to "I really can't believe that it provides enough health benefit for it to be worth the effort!

I understand, thankyou.
I'm afraid I didn't put two-and-two together. It honestly hadn't occurred to me that people may find breathing through their mouth distasteful (and even, I suppose, not being able to get enough oxygen that way) I was thinking in terms of the 'making colds last longer' thing!
Sorry for being dense :)

Thanks for "getting it."

I have allergies and a deviated septum. I wake up in the morning totally plugged. Every morning. The day begins with a reverberating "Wonk!" as my father's days began before me, and as my siblings' days begin. The "wonk" is answer by my parrot, mocking me, and my DH laughing. But it allows me to actually use that otherwise decorative and useless thing in the middle of my face for a while.

On many occasions I breathe through my mouth because there's just no way to get air through my nose. It's gross. I hate it. It makes eating impossible and disgusting. It dehydrates me quickly. I've tried breathing through ears and eyes but it just doesn't work.

Slight o/t and kind of disgusting, but have you ever tried using saline, a nasal aspirator, and flushed your sinuses?  It seems to help some people clear things out?

I use a saline spray several times each day. As for the actual sinus flushing, I tried that but couldn't escape the feeling that I was drowning. It as horrible and completely ruined my day every time I tried it, so I finally gave up.

I know you didn't mention the regular OTC decongestant sprays, but others might. I know better than to use them because of the rebound effect that's far worse than what you're trying to fix. Prescription allergy sprays (Flonase and whatnot) don't work so well for me, either.

It's not like these are allergies you can easily escape. If you're allergic to dogs you just don't keep a dog, right? I'm allergic to dust, mold and perfume. That's it. On my old allergist's 1-4 severity scale I'm a 3 on each of those, and dust and mold are everywhere. I do my best to avoid the perfume, and it means giving up many activities I'd otherwise enjoy--like movies at theatres--but sometimes you just have to be somewhere and can't leave just because someone mistook their atomizer for the showerhead.

The only things I ever do in public is apply lip balm! People clipping fingernails, applying makeup, using toothpicks, blowing their noses etc in public makes me really cross, but I keep quiet about it as I realise I am unusually intolerant!

You've never blown your nose in your life? Seriously? What do you do when you get all stuffed up or your nose is running?

I didn't see her post as snarky either.  You posted something that is quite unusual - nothing wrong with it, just unusual.  I don't think I've ever met someone who has never blown their nose in their entire life!

You also said that you won't teach your kids to blow their noses.  Since little kids get so many colds and boogers hanging down, I don't see that as remotely possible.  For me, blowing my nose when it's stuffy provides great relief, especially when the sinuses are clogged.

My mom used to say the kids next door always had dirty noses.  I don't mean to be gross, but dried boogers etc.  I have to admit, it's not nice to look at and it gives the impression the parent doesn't keep them clean.

I may be butting in here, but I think there is a definite difference between blowing and wiping...

Oh, I agree, but I didn't want to be too graphic. ;)
