We have a self-invite today
« on: February 04, 2007, 02:53:23 PM »
Every year during Football Season, DH watches Monday Night Football with a bunch of neighborhood guys who trade off hosting.  We usually also host the Super Bowl.

DH had his 40th birthday last week, and asked me if instead of a big birthday party we could just have some close friends over to watch the big game and have that double as his birthday celebration.  I made sure everyone knew it was the big 4-0 and we only invited about five families.

Yesterday evening, while DH wasn't home, I got a call from one of the regular Monday Night guys (let's call him K), who we don't know all that well.  Our conversation went something like this:

K: So your husband told me that he's hosting a Super Bowl party tomorrow, but I never got an invitation.

Me (thinking DH had invited him): Oh, yeah, we are.  Come on over tomorrow at four, and your family is welcome.  Also, do you know it's DH's birthday?

K: What kind of beer did he get?

Me: I think it's Live Oak.

K: What kind, lager or pale ale?

Me: Gee, I have no idea.  But he also got Bud Lite.

K: Well, that's special.  I meant real beer.  Well, I guess someone will bring something else.

(Okay, so clearly it's time to get this character off the phone.)

Me: Oh, I'm sure there will be plenty of beer.  See you tomorrow, then?

Later, I found out that DH hadn't spoken to K recently; he had just made a comment earlier in the season that he was probably going to host the Super Bowl, and the treatment he gave me was exactly the reason he hadn't included him in the invitation list.

Hopefully he won't be happy with the beer selection and will go home quickly.

Well, if your husband spoke to him earlier in the season I guess I can understand why K might have thought he was invited.   But if he hadn't recieved an official, more detailed invitation closer to the date he might have taken a hint. I'd chalk this up to a little confusion possibly from your husband's end, but also to a lack of seeing the obvious from K's part.

Perhaps when K arrives you can tell him your husband accidently dropped all the cases of beer and they all broke?  :P

Is it possible that since you always host Super Bowl, that the guy assumed b/c he's part of the Monday Night crowd, that he was also invited?

I think he was horribly rude on the phone.

He sounds a little self-absorbed.

If someone doesn't like the beer selections at a casual party I'm having, he is welcome to bring his own.

(Fortunately, we're not having a Super Bowl party this year. I'm just plain tired.)

How incredibly rude.  I can almost forgive the self invite, I can almost see why someone who comes weekly for the football game would assume he was invited to the Super Bowl party that he knew your DH was having.

But the beer thing!

Most of my crowd is beer drinkers, and it's just standard that we all bring our own.  Usually the host will have a few six packs of something new that they think everyone might want to try, but anyone who drinks more than a beer or two brings a cooler of their own.  For one thing, it leaves room in the host's refrigerator for food.

We're pretty simple people, entertainment wise.  Hosts know if they ARE doing a big blowout and providing everything, they have to be sure to let everyone know that the refrigerator is fully stocked with a wide variety and insist that no one bring their own.

Gee, if he wants someone to bring something different perhaps the someone who wants something different should be the one to bring it. Sheesh.

"Actually, we're only serving Bud. But I hear there's a great selection of beer at the pub on the other side of town"

EvilCat wants you to shove a 6 pack of beer in his hands after he rings the bell and then shut the door. With him on the other side.

Okay...enquiring minds (mine, actually) wanna know:  What happened when Mr. Beer Gourmet got there?  Or did he even dare to darken your door?

I'm a bit picky about my beer also, but my favorite kind is FREE. I can't imagine questioning my hosts about what kind of beer they plan on providing. If you're that picky, bring a sixer of your own!
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

Oh. My. GOODNESS.  That's worse than the people who took off with my New Year's Eve party!  At least THEY brought their own beer.

LOL Auntie!  As I often say (particularly when scrounging things for theatrical sets), "Free is my favorite size, shape and color!"

My crowd works the same way, but especially for football parties! I do believe even Miss Manners agrees. I think it was her column that someone had written in saying how much they resented having to pitch in on refreshments when going over to a friend's house to watch football and even she said that football hosting is not the same as a regular party and that it is usual for people to bring their own beer and to possibly contribute food as well.

That guy was really really rude.

...and who on earth complains about Live Oak???  ::) Philistine ...

It's alright, man. I'm only bleeding, man. Stay hungry, stay free, and do the best you can.
