Our old lease is still in force until July.  Legally, they can't do anything to change our lease until the old lease expires since they bought the duplex mid year.  I don't think they would do anything anyway.  I really like my neighbors, they're wonderful people--but we've got to do something about the smoke coming through.

It occurs to me that we may share a vent in the laundry room...I'll have to check that out, but I really think it's coming through the outlets.  Is there anything I can do about that?

Out of curiosity, have you tried calling your local public health department to find out what the laws involve when you've got shared ventilation?  Have you tried calling the housing board for your state, to find out similar?  I'm not entirely sure about the legality of this entire setup, and if that's the case, your landlord is required to solve the problem.  You don't have to necessarily report anything until you know what's cool and what's not, but just call around on a fact-finding mission.
