Superbowl ads--thoughts?
Peaches737:
There was a Snickers ad aired at the superbowl. Pretty stupid IMHO, but I thought it was a razz on homophobes..Two guys, They did the "Lady and the Tramp" spaghetti scene with a chocolate bar, and freaked out when they were lip to lip. They had to, then, do something "manly" like rip their chest hair out. (I've never seen this happen on poker night)
I thought it was funny.
What the ad said to me is that people overreact to benign situations. Overcompensation, etc. The kind of people that are threatened about being hit on by a gay man or woman (honey, you're not that hot, and the people you are afraid of aren't interested.)
I tend to love the absurd, but I hear today that happy (G gets filtered) rights activists have rallied to have the ad pulled.
I agreee that the ad was stupid, but I thought it was anti-homophobic, rather than demeaning. I would love feedback.
PS--the rock/paper scissors ad killed me

I suppose as a "happy" woman myself, I should have been offended, but even I laughed. I will fight homophobia until I die, but I also have a sense of humor. Think the bed scene in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles".

There were alternate endings to the ad on the website, including one in which they beat each other with wrenches.
I found the ad disturbing and believe it sends the wrong message. However, my thoughts about the ad do not have anything to do with the realm of etiquette, and so I won't comment further.

The Snickers one was just - well, it made me wonder what their ad people were smoking. It was insulting to everyone, IMO I just want to know why removing is considered manly (I mean, really, isn't that what we ladies do? ;-)
Rock/Paper/Scissors is still making me giggle.
I loved the Coke ad, with the video game look. That was inventive.

I read a commentary about that particular commercial, and the writer pointed out that 'men pulling out chest hair' is a fairly metrosexual thing to do.
I thought it was funny, and didn't think it was homophobic. I just saw it as two guys who suddenly found themselves in an odd situation.
