Help! My Jaw has hit the floor and I can't pick it up!
FurBabyMom:
Hi! I'm glad to have found this forum and have learned quite a bit from all your advice and opinions on various subjects. I've never really thought that I'd be posting a topic, but an editorial letter in my local newspaper this morning has just left me flabbergasted!
The writer of the letter is responding to an article written in our newspaper about a 10-year old's request that our state ban smoking in automobiles in which small children are riding, applauding the child's initiative and agreeing that second-hand smoke poses such hazards to young children, especially in such a confined space as a closed automobile. [Okay, I'm fine with the letter right up to this point]
However, the writer goes on to say that many times her 13-year old son has traveled on car trips with a friend whose father constantly smokes and that the son returns home with red eyes, a scratchy throat and smelling of stale cigarettes, and that the state should support this legislation to protect our children.
Hello??? Is this woman waiting for the state to pass legislation on this before she does what she should be doing as a responsible parent and not allow her son to continue be exposed to this situation knowing full well how it adversely affects his health on what seems like a regular basis?
[Jumping off my soapbox now]
snowball's chance:
I think you make an excellent point!
I am a smoker myself, but I do not smoke in confined spaces with non-smokers, adults OR children (such as cars).
Slartibartfast:
What about situations where the 10-year-old IS the smoker? Is it okay then, since they're doing it anyway? (*tongue in cheek disclaimer*)
I'm definitely not a fan of smoking, but it seems strange to me to make smoking in your own car illegal. I mean, if the children are in a car with an adult who smokes, it's pretty reasonable to assume they're around at other times when the adult is smoking, too . . . so if that's an issue, address the smoking, not the car!

POD.
She is one of many who wants someone else to do something instead doing something about it herself.
I don't smoke and don't care for it. I have been in the situations where I knew the driver my son was riding with smoked. I asked them if they could please not smoke while my child was in their car.

Unfortunately it seems these days parents look to the state to do their parenting for them. My stepsister allows her son to stay w/her mom (his grandma) even though grandma smokes like a chimney and her entire house stinks. And the best (or worst) part is that sis complains of the stench saying how her eyes water, etc. when she's over at her mom's, yet sis will allow her teenage son to stay there for a few days at at time. I just want to slap her upside the head sometimes. Hello! If you think that type of environment is bad for you, why do you allow your son there?
Arrrggg! So frustrating.
