Rude mall employee
« on: December 08, 2006, 08:25:58 AM »
Last night I took Thing 1 (4 years old) with me to the mall.  After we had wandered around a bit he announced that he had to GO.  Anyone familiar with kids knows that when they say they have to go, it is urgent.

So we get to the restroom area and there is a guy there just setting up the barriers that he is going to start cleaning the ladies' room.  I don't trust DS to go in the mens' room by himself yet and this mall has a family-style bathroom (bigger room with a couple of open toilets, diaper changing area, room for stroller)  A woman was there just ahead of us ans she went into the family room.

Thing 1 was almost crying having to go and I distracted him playing rock/paper/scissors while we waited our turn.  Woman finishes, leaves, and we go in.  We were in there about 10 seconds when someone else comes along and I hear Rude Mall Guy yelling at them that they can't come in the ladies room they have to use the family room and he's going on and on with this.  Someone knocks on the door of the family room and I say "occupied, we'll be just a minute"  Thing 1 finishes his business, and starts to get dressed.

Next thing I hear is Rude Mall Guy YELLING at the top of his lungs outside that we are taking too long, there is a line out here, other people gotta use the room, and he's shaking the door handle.  It scared Thing 1.  I helped him wash his hands and we left, giving Rude Mall Guy (Who I'm pretty sure was supposed to be cleaning the other bathroom so it could be reopened) the look of death.

We were only in there slightly longer than it would take an average grown-up to go, wash up, and leave -- and part of the reason it took longer was because my son was scared of the man yelling outside.  >:(

And when we left there were 2 people in line and neither of them looked particularly upset.  So I'm pretty sure it was just RMG making a big scene for no good reason :(

Did you complain to mall management? That is absolutely unacceptable! Maybe, to alleviate the line, he should have been cleaning the women's room as quickly as possible so that people could use THAT restroom. And just for the record, a mom helping a four year old go potty is exactly the situation that family restroom is designed for.

some people make me so mad!

1) Of course you wouldn't send a 4 year old into a restroom by himself!

2) Who peed on that guy's cornflakes?

Shaking the doorhandle?  How much more rude can you possibly get? Wait, I don't want to know.  I highly doubt the people in line were pitching a fit about waiting a few minutes, Mr. Wonderful was probably in a bad mood and determined to take it out on everyone else.  That is bad enough, but diubly bad when you are at work and should be acting like a professional.

No, I didn't complain, because I used to work at that mall and I know exactly how helpful mall management would be :(

Aw, it sounds like he has Really Bad social skills.  Which in turn sounds like there is probably Something Else going on.  I'm sure he didn't mean it personally.  Hopefully by the time Thing 1 is 10, it will seem funny instead of frightening?

I would report it to management anyway. And maybe even higher on the chain of command if I thought nothing would be done at the lower level.  He doesn't sound like anyone I would want to meet in a dark alley...or even a lit one.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

Report him. What if Thing One had been sick, or had diarrhea? It happens....and who elected him toilet sheriff? Why didn't he hassle the woman who went in there ahead of you? There is no need for anyone to comment on the length of time another person spends in the restroom. Some of us ( :-[) have certain conditions that make our toileting take a little longer than usual sometimes....but I suppose when you're the Bathroom Ubermensch that doesn't figure in.
Seriously, report him. He scared your kid, he was incredibly rude and deserves to be made to answer for it.

I worked at this mall for over 3 years.  I've seen mall employees bite security guards (sadly, the employee in question worked at the same store as me, she was a total fruit loop), security guards sexually harass mall employees, (more of my direct co-workers, and me once) and more.  Mall management will do NOTHING.

I also don't know the guys name.  I can't very well report "the maintenence guy who can't speak properly"

I'll speak with my dollars.  I will no longer be shopping at that mall.  There is another, better one just as convenient for me to get to.  The only reason I was at this one the other night was because Thing 1 asked for an Auntie Anne's pretzel as a treat and I'm not sure whether there is an Auntie Anne's in the other mall.

As a retail employee (past) you know that those dollars speak louder than anything. And if mall management is that nasty, you don't want to do business there anyway.
BTW I think there's an Auntie Anne's on the moon, I bet your other mall has one...

 ;D

I'm pretty sure it does, but I wasn't 100% positive.  Thing 1 and I were enjoying some rare alone time together and he specifically asked for one of those pretzels.  So I didn't want to disappoint him, and I took him to the mall I knew for a fact had them.  We didn't buy anything else there!!  (And never will again.)

It's not enough, though, to just not shop there anymore.  You really do need to let TPTB know that they lost a customer and exactly why.  One person not shopping there means nothing to them. One person not shopping there who's taken the time to write a letter explaining that dollars were lost because of something they had the power to fix makes a difference and indicates to them that others may be leaving for the same reason.
