Spare me commercials that create racism and discrimination where none exists, because the "discriminated against group" (think cavemen) doesn't exist!

Where have those commercials created racism and discrimination? I was pretty sure everyone knows they're a joke. Don't tell me someone is actually calling them racist.  ??? Are people really that stupid & oversensitive?

There was a commercial on a long time ago for Wendy's. I'm talking so long ago that the woman in the commercial was talking on a phone that was hung on a wall and had one of those reeeaaaally long cords, from before cordless phones were normal. The commercial had very soft lighting and a woman with shoulder lenghth, sort of curly blonde hair saying breathily into the phone, "I got my license ... ... ... to eat."
AAAUUUUGHH!!! I don't know why, but even the memory of that commercial makes my head want to explode.

Does anyone else remember it?
Yeah, I know they're a joke.  They're just not a funny joke.

Off-topic, but my husband had hyperthyroidism caused by Graves Disease. He lost about 50 pounds in short order when I was pregnant in 1999, he lost some muscle function, and he lost a lot of hair. We had no idea what was wrong with him - my MIL insisted it was stress from being sole financial support of our family, I was worried it was something terminal, but my mother suggested he have his thyroid tested. Sure enough, that was it.

I was diagnosed with Graves disease several years ago and it was a horrible experience with exaggerated, weird symptoms.  I never want to go through that again.  I am in remission and thankfully still have my thyroid.  I took Tapazole for a few years.  Thyroid disease can be dangerous if you go into a thyroid storm, not to mention what it does to your blood pressure and pulse, so it's good that your mom suggested a thyroid test.

I loathe those Empire Today commercials.  That song makes me want to jam ice picks into my ear drums.

On top of having super annoying commercials, they also have the worst product/service of just about any company on earth, if www.ripoffreport.com is any clue.  The number of complaints about that company is mind boggling.

So when I see their commercial on TV, I just about lose my lunch.

I am 64 inches tall and wear a size 0, 1 or 2 (depending on manufacturer), and I am perfectly normal and healthy.

That said, I think it's ridiculous to use "from a 10 to a 2" for a diet aid commercial. And I cannot STAND that chirpy, perky NutriSystem woman. "Looka me, I'm in a TEW!"

Congratulations - you are probably in the 5 - 8% of the population who is that size "naturally" instead of due to starving yourself.  There are always some people who are naturally of an appearance for almost any variation of the human appearance.  Just not that many of them compared to the general population...........and the general population is not going to be that petite.  Just like the general population is not red headed or blue eyed.......

I am not in that small group.  Back in the day BEFORE children, when I was spending my liesure time exercising - I was a twelve (34 inch hips) and *might* could have gone down to a ten (32 inch hips) if I had chosen to cut back on the calories or add more exercise to my routine.  But me trying to reduce to a lower size range than a ten would have my rib bones and shoulder blades showing in a rather alarming manner.  (Relating to the other example, I do have blue-shading-to-hazel eyes and have been known to dye my hair - but DD is a natural redhead, so I do carry those genes - they just aren't expressed in my appearance.)

**No flames please**

I am not trying to be offensive - just pointing out that any ONE fashionable size, hair color, eye color, skin color, etc. is going to mean that the majority of the world's population is not going to have that exact appearance - without artifice being involved.  And if albinos were to become all the rage - there are a few people who are naturally of that appearance - while there would be more who would wear contacts and bleach their hair to make it LOOK like they were a part of the latest fashion craze..........

I have 32 inch hips right now (32-25-32).  I've always been flat-chested and narrow-hipped (but I do have pretty developed muscles in my thighs) and small-framed.

Sizes have changed over the years - at age 22, I had a 23-inch waist, weighed 105 pounds and wore size 5/6. Now my waist is two inches bigger and I weigh 10-12 pounds more.

My mother said that when she was a teenager in the 50s, size 8 was unheard of, size 10 was impossibly tiny, and size 12 was considered ideal.

I just don't think size 0/1/2 is all that rare these days, considering how vanity sizing has taken over the clothing industry. I still think it's a ridiculous benchmark for them to use in the NS commercials.

I agree with you all -- I was a size ten and was a big fat hippo" (paraphrased) WHO are you thinking of trying to sell that line too?

and Anna's Trim Spa Baby. Riiiiiiighht She was manupulated just as bad as we all are in the diet aid commercials.

I come from "hearty" German stock (which means my BUTT will never see a size 14 again let alone a TEW.  You know, you can diet all you want but that doesn't shrink your bone structure.  I could probably remove all my flesh from my skeleton and it would still be a size 14.  I am an 18/20 right now)

Ps - I have Grave's too. they did a radiation thing to get it to shut down.

Wow - we have a lot of people here with Grave's or, like me, a loved one with Grave's. It would have been hard to picture the havoc it can wreak if I hadn't seen it with my husband.

Thyroid problems run in my family (bless Grandma, it's all her fault <grin> we told her that too) Carried by the men, show up in the women, lucky me.

My one Aunt had Hashimodo syndrome (don't ask me how that is different, don't know) But when I first went to the endocrinologist (big word, whoo) I told him she had suffered from Hiroshima syndrome, talk about feeling like an idjit.

Sometimes I wonder what is happening to us out there, it seems like there is more and more people being diagnosed with problems.

THe colestoral commercials are another good one -- <deep improtant sounding Voice> you must have below this number to be healthy -- take our drug -- take our drug.

Never mind that last year your numbers were well within the "normal" range AND THEY HAVEN'T CHANGED but this year they are HIGH -- take our drug --take our drug

Blood preasure the same way -- Take our drug -- take our drug

little bit of heartburn -- take our drug -- take our drug

Men's aids - can't ....... -- take our drug -- take our drug

OPPPS got a little long there, but hey I put it back on topic - sort of

I was wondering about that...

In my college years (pre marriage and children) I weighed 115 and was a 34/24/34 and I wore a size 5.  I was tiny.  I look at these women getting into size 1/2 who are bigger than I was then and I think "HOW?".  I didn't realize that they had changed sizing standards.  I feel much better now.   ;)

What is happening is that the advances of modern medicine are allowing people with medical challenges that would have killed them a century ago to live and BREED. Some of them might have died younger after having only one child now survive longer and have several children.

This means that there are some genes staying in the gene pool that would have been cleaned out, the hard way, in past generations.

Whether or not this is good or bad for homo sapiens may be determined by how long it takes the medical community to come up with other ways to clean the gene pool.

I've been reading some stories set in a future where a world gets technology that is new to it but old hat to the rest of the galaxy and how some of the changes in medical technology impact the society - interesting speculative fiction. The fact that it is mere set dressing for GOOD story telling means that I find something new to think about almost every time I read something by that author.

And the catastrophic failure of civilization and artificial technology is a whole other genre - By The Waters of Babylon is a story along much the same lines as the television show Jericho - but about thirty-five years earlier............  I am NOT watching Jericho, if anyone wonders.

The NutriSystem one is really among the worst. In the longer one a woman actually says "Certainly no man is going to take a second look at a large woman walking down the street."

EXCUSE ME???

I know. I wish they would have seen me in tacco bell the one day when I made mens heads turn. As a larger women I still get looks from men.

Ahh yes, but I still wonder how many of our medical ''problems'' are caused by the drug companies ''finding'' a new drug?

If you find a drug that helps ''this problem'' then we need to make sure the public ''has'' this problem. Real or not.

I agree that it is a ridiculous benchmark. I used to be a size 2, as well. It was very irritating that people assumed i was on drugs or excercised like mad to get that way, while in reality i was doing what i could to gain weight. Having total strangers start a conversation with "Boy, you are so skinny! Do you ever eat?!?" is every bit as rude as walking up to someone and commenting that they are so fat they must eat a ton.  [/rant]

Yeah, I know they're a joke.  They're just not a funny joke.

I just realized how badly that came out. I really didn't mean you personally didn't get that the commercials are a joke, and i apologize.
