Things that make you go "Ooops!"
« on: February 09, 2007, 04:42:38 PM »
When we lived on our farm, we ran into a problem on how to store the dog food. To keep it fresh and keep mice away, we purchased a plastic garbage can with a lid. Worked perfectly in all seasons!

Fast forward to today. We moved 2 weeks ago and are still settling into our temporary home. Much of our yard is inaccessible due to snow drifts, so the little porch is crammed with things. But I thought it was pretty organized. Not!

This morning was trash pick up and when dh came home for lunch, he said "Hold on, I'll bring up the garbage cans so you can put them on the porch."

I look outside and say, in that "uh oh" voice "Hon? Why are there three garbage cans?"
"That's what the kids brought me from the deck." (Hubby is a smart guy. Why he didn't stop and wonder about the number of containers puzzles me)

I point to the one "That one had the dog food in it!" Then I drawled "You want to maybe stop on the way home and get some dog food?"

While I wish we hadn't tossed out a fair bit of dog food, I do have to wonder what the trashman thought when he took the lid off and saw that it was full of kibble!

Ooops!

The thing that makes me go Ooops the most often:

Sending an email to someone telling them all about the attached photo/spreadsheet/whatever I am sending, and then sending the email WITHOUT the file attached.  Then I have to send another email apologizing for being a numbskull, this time actually attaching the file.

Once I was in the mall Xmas shopping with my dad. I was paying for something for my mom and was a dollar short plus tax. Turning, I called to my dad, "Dad, I need a couple a' f***s!" when I meant to say "Dad, I need a couple a' bucks!"

*redfaced* I never lived it down.

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt!

I think my two worst "Oops!" ever were:

- forgetting I was supposed to babysit my friend's daughter and going out instead

and

- forgetting I had promised someone a ride home and leaving the function without her

In both cases I was mortified and apologized for months afterwards!!!!!

Thanksgiving day...Mom is doing the cooking and has cooked up the neck and giblets for gravy the night before and has the broth in her stainless steel pitcher in the fridge.
I'm pitching in, helping with the meal.  I look in the fridge and see this disgusting pitcher of juice with mold floating on top.  I throw it down the sink...Whoops!  It's not juice!  It's the broth with little bits of fat floating on top.  Not only did I think it was juice, I went so far as to think it was grapefruit juice!  I wonder if that was the same year my mother forgot to make the creamed onions.  We never let her live that one down either, but ever since I forgot to put out the big plate of stuffed celery my daugher labored over two years in a row, I have to forgive the creamed onions.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.

There was a snowstorm where I was this week, but I still had to run out to the store.

When I came out, I brushed the snow off the car's back window, and went to get in.  As I opened the door, I thought to lean forward and take one last look to check that I'd removed enough snow.

CRACK! Pointy edge of door on skull. OOOPS!

It's a wonder they didn't find my unconscious body frozen solid in the parking lot hours later.

I'm eating raw veggies for lunch these days because I am sick of looking like Raymond Burr's twin sister. Raw veggies make you toot. It's so lovely to rip one in the library...oops... :-[
I'm also the Queen Beyond Compare of the foot in the mouth. I was furiously berating a friend to someone when the room got quiet. She was right behind me. Oh yeah. Not the first time that's happened either...
I have finally found the bar I can't get thrown out of....

We just moved to a new community 2 1/2 weeks ago.

Yesterday, dh and I decided to drive around and look at potential houses to buy (we are currently renting.)

Although my map was published in 2006, the city has grown so quickly that the map is already out of date. Consequently, some of the newer subdivisions aren't on the map.

So there we are, heading for one of the new subdivisions. We can see our destination, we just can't find the road that leads there.

We take a side road around behind the community center, looking for a through road.
"There!" I say, pointing. There is a spot where the snow is cleared, leading to what seems to be a road going the right way.

So dh turns us onto this road.
As soon as we get there, we both say "Wow, this road is really icy!"
And then we look at each other in horror.

We had just driven onto an outdoor skating rink!

Needless to say, we quickly reversed and got off!!!!
And, fortunately, we didn't mar or soil the ice.

But boy did we feel stupid!!
I swear though, there was no signage and it looked like a grey road, going the right direction!

Ooops!!!!!!!

Wow, I hope it wasn't a pond that was frozen over!  That could have been disastrous!

Wow, I hope it wasn't a pond that was frozen over!  That could have been disastrous!

No, it wasn't - fortunately!

It was an engineered oval, designed for ice skating.

Ponds would be 2 years ago when I drove through a flooded intersection, misjudged where the road was and wound up in a flooded ditch.
I still remember the kids yelling "There's water coming in the car!"
I opened my window because I remembered that I wouldn't be able to open the door until pressure equalized. The kids crawled out into the arms of some passers-by.

The car ended up sinking up to the windshield.
My friend drove by to look at this astonishing sight. By this point, the electrical system was fritzing out and the windshield wipers had started up.  :)
She said "I'm sorry, I couldn't help laughing. All I could think was "I don't think that's going to help...."

Turns out that many people stopped to by to gawk at our car. Most took pictures.
A colleague of mine got a picture of my van emailed to him by his niece - who lives 3000 miles away.  :o

I also took pictures, for insurance purposes. I printed one out and wrote a note to my son's teacher.
"We did not stop to retrieve belongings when we evacuated the vehicle. Please excuse LittleJohnny for not having his homework done."
She said it was the most unique excuse note she'd ever recieved.... :)

I really, really don't want to laugh...but I can't help myself!

I just got over "the cold" that's going around.  Anyway, I'm still coughing a little and it seems after lunch every time I cough, a wee toot pops out.  Except for a week ago.

Of course I had both broccoli and cauliflower for lunch and about an hour later I coughed then had to loudly exclaim, "Darn, I hate it when the foundation shifts like that!!"  Of course someone had to point out we do live in an earthquake zone...

Oy, it was bad...

TMI
I'm on the tail end of one of those nasty colds, and I am still performing vigorous lung exercises at regular times throughout the day.  I desperately *wish* that a little toot was all that was coming out of me!

Thank G** for Poise.

I once lost a porkchop.

I found it a couple days later in a drawer.

I've found them (and assorted other forgotten leftovers) in the microwave, but never in a drawer.

Was it all dried out? 'Cause that's the "Ancient Egypt" way of preparing them. You know, "Pork Cheops".
