Your Valentines day traditions?
« on: February 12, 2007, 01:28:43 PM »
Well, actually, Jellybean and I celebrate by making each other cards and I cook a nice dinner and we eat by candle light, no gifts.

We actually celebrate on the 22nd as that is the ann of our first date together (5 years this month).  Then we go out to dinner and exchange token gifts, not sure what we will do for our first anniversary, but I am looking forward to making some new traditions.

So, do you celebrate?  DO you have any traditions?

Valentine's Day is DH's birthday, so I try to focus on the birthday aspect rather than Valentine's Day.  I usually make him a cheesecake -- I have a heart-shaped springform pan that I use for it.

The idea of getting flowers or going out to eat for Valentine's Day doesn't sit well with me...overpriced, overcrowded, overdone etc.  I certainly don't need any chocolate or stuffed animals.  (My "sis" sent me a Vermont Teddy Bear for my birthday a couple of years ago -- I had coveted the ones she used to get growing up, and I have a Build-a-Bear dressed as a fairy.  I don't need any more stuffies.)

I would LOVE a red kitchenaid mixer though  ;D  Maybe someday.

Thing 1 & Thing 2 love to make chocolate lollipops and I'm hoping that AC Moore still has some valentiny molds left.  If they do, I'll pick some up tonight and we'll make lollipops together tomorrow.  If not, I have some flower shaped ones we can use in a pinch.  I'm trying to pick up a couple of interesting molds each holiday, now that the boys are old enough to participate and enjoy it, it makes for a fun tradition.

Ummm.. ummm... ummmm... I am ALWAYS single (or in an LDR) on V-Day so my tradition is kid-centered. I always get them a small gift (a dvd, a cd, a pack of yu-gi-oh cards, something like that...) and a card and take them out to dinner. Early so we beat the V-Day rush :)

Last year The Marine and I were together and he came up to take me out for V-Day. It was the frist V-day I'd ever spent out w/o my bosy and it just felt WRONG. I won't be doing that again, regardless of my relationship status! Ummm... until they are big enought o have their own V-day dates, of course ::)

Red and I don't really have any traditions besides going out to dinner (usually sometime the week of Valentine's Day when we both have off--this year, it's today!) and a present.  We're going to Longhorn Steakhouse--yum!

Yes, I'm single!

When I was single me and my friends would have "Anit-V day parties"...we watched "My Bloody Valentine", and other really NON romantic movies, ordered pizza, drank beer.  Some years we wore all black, others we had PJ parties.

Best year ever we had a "Shot Gun".  Basically, all the women wore their ugliest prom or bridesmaid dress, them men wore old suits and tuxes from the thrift store, and we had a bunch of "Shot Gun" weddings and divorces all night long.  There was a lot of beer an Jello shots involved, I think I got married 5 times that night..walked down the isle to "Superfreak" once, got to be the "preacher" a few times, and best of all, ruined that gawdawful red bridesmaid dress to a point were it was not fit for the rag bag.

AHHH, good times!

Well since my b-day is today (Feb 12) and V-day is two days later, we've started going out to dinner, or doing something, on the 13th. That way we kill two birds with one stone, and we don't have to deal w/all the crowds out at dinner, etc. Other than that just a card and some chocolates. (I'll take any excuse for my DH to get me some good ol' Godiva dark chocolates). If he's inclined I like flowers, but NOT roses. Any colorful boquet will do. Roses are so overpriced at V-day that it's not worth it, and besides, there are plenty of other prettier flowers out there!

That sounds like fun! Great idea.

Nicoletta ...  i do the same thing :) single or coupled.

Mr. hgish (otherwise known as the bf) has been wanting an "I'm what Willis was talkin' 'bout" t-shirt that i ordered, and i think it is going to get delivered on Wednesday just by coincidence.

My husband and I like to cook together (although we're usually too lazy to get very creative during the week), so we pick a decadent recipe with lots of ingredients that we might not normally splurge on and make something fun. Of course, this has disadvantages too, like the year when the recipe we tried out was so horrible that we eventually called out for pizza - but the memory is fun! Then we usually just have a nice quiet evening with no phones or distractions.

I buy myself a bouquet of flowers.

I got in the habit of this about 15 years ago.  My mother's long time boyfriend died in January, so for Valentine's Day, I sent her a mixed bouquet, and, since I wasn't dating anyone at the time, I picked up a bunch for myself.  I thought about it afterwards and realized that I've never received anything for Valentine's Day even when I was dating someone.  This probably contributes to why I no longer date.

I can get my own darn flowers, thank you very much.   :)

Yes, I'm single!

Even when I have been in a relationship, I still hate VDay. There is just something wrong with the whole concept. Why should anyone be told by a national "holiday" to do something nice and romantic for their sweetie? Those things should just come naturally and be done throughout the year. No one should need the world to tell them of a specific day set aside to do all this, there is something wrong with their relationship if that is so. relationships have to be programmed?? Okay, I'll stop now with that vent.

But anyway, I am a single right now (and never celebrated the day when I haven't been, due to the reasons stated above), so my other single friends and I make sure to have fun. We go out to lunch and give each other those kiddie dime-store Valentines and treats.

We don't have any traditions, beyond helping the kids make/sign Valentines for their classmates and friends.

DH is usually on the road, but this year that's the only day off he has in 2 weeks.  So I'll make a lamb tagine for the 3 of us and pour champagne for he and I.  DD gets a small bit of chocolate from Godiva and a stuffed bear.  DH and I have decided not to exchange anything.  It'll be nice and and quiet.

We don't really have a "tradition" per se, but we do take turns being in charge of V day.  We also take turns being in charge of anniversaries.  So since I'm in charge of V day this year, Mr. H will be in charge of our anniversary.  Next year Mr. H will be in charge of V day and I will be in charge of our anniversary.  Does that count as a tradition?

Other than that, we keep it pretty low key--the point is to spend it together if at all possible.

Sometimes I make a nice meal, or he does.  Wine, but what else is new.  And he often gets me flowers.

I already made and froze a huge batch of waffles, so we'll be having some of those on Wednesday morning.  I made blueberry waffles, cranberry waffles, chocolate-chip waffles and plain waffles.  I kind of wish I'd made sausage waffles, but I never have and so forgot.  Love homemade belgian waffles.
