newbie question on nail clippers in public

I guess it all depends on the people, really.  For some reason, I have never had a problem with nail clipping in public.  It's not like I was taught that way, either. It never came up.  So I have done it in public. Not a lot, but enough.  However, blowing my nose in public just grosses me out.  Other people doing it also grosses me out. I *know* it's necessary sometimes, but especially around food......Ick! 

But clip your nails all you want. I don't mind.

Unfortunately, I can beat that. I had a coworker who would floss her teeth after she ate right in the work area, right in front of God and everyone. Yes we had a bathroom, and yes it was clean and not unpleasant to be in. My friend has a coworker who comes in every morning with a cup of water and a toothbrush and brushes her teeth at her desk. Absolutely nasty! I was taught that if you were going to engage in any activity where something might leave your body (nails, hairs, toothpaste spit) you needed to be at home or in the restroom.
And if there is an emergency and one's nail has to be doctored, do it into a cupped hand and dispose of the clipping in a trash can, or drop it in your bag to be thrown out at home. Who wants that flipping up in the air near their face!!

When I was younger there was man that would sit in the choir seats at church and clip his nails.     Yep...in church, every Sunday--where everyone could see him.  He ended up marrying one of my friends and I assume she broke him of this habit.  I hope!

On the subway may have been an avoidance tactic.  Late...not a lot of people...don't want to look at the others--I think I'll clip my nails!  Maybe?

I'm with you-I think grooming yourself in public is gross and rude.  (This applies to anything beyond combing/brushing hair and putting on makeup-those are things I can live with.)

See, I'm the other way around. I have occationally done a quick clip of a broken nail or hangnail while in my cube at work, but I wouldn't dream of combing my hair or doing my makeup in public. I feel odd enough combing my hair in the bathroom at work, and my makeup stays at all times in my bathroom.

Clipping nails in front of everyone on the bus, though, is just weird.

You're not in the wrong here. Using nail clippers in public like that is gross and unsanitary. They should only be used in the bathroom or a similar enclosed space, such as a private office.

I do sometimes blow my nose in public, but only if I really have to and can't avoid going someplace else to do it. For instance, I had quite a cold last week and while in church, I had to blow my nose a few times while sitting in the pews. I was as discreet and quiet about it as possible. If I hadn't, I would of either been sitting there with a running nose, which is totally gross, or I would of been getting up very often, which would of been more disruptive to the people around me than blowing my nose. Otherwise I'll step in a corner or go into another private place to do it. I don't like seeing or hearing it with other people too, but I understand that sometimes, as in my case, it's a necessity to do it in public.

What I think is absolutely inexcusable is people blowing their noses at a dining table!! My father has done this for years, and so do some of my friends. It is totally gross and inappropriate to do at a table where people are trying to enjoy their meal without having their appetites ruined. And my father always takes his sweet time putting away his handkerchief, so you have to turn away from him completely lest you get a glimpse of his icky snot rag. I've lectured him many times on how rude and gross this is, but he disagrees.

Understood.  For what it's worth, I blow my nose in public far too much.  Is 'in my cubicle at work' in public?  Well, I have allergies and asthma, and that adds up to a whole lotta gunk that needs to come out.  If I ran to the bathroom every time my nose needed it, I'd be fired.  But I try to keep it down, and I never do it in a restaurant at the table. 

Who said that their co-worker brushes at the desk?  Oh ICK!  You've just out-grossed me!  LOL

I think an office cubicle is an acceptable place to do it, as long as you are sitting down so that it is not too loud as I do. Like you said, otherwise you'd be getting up all the time and not able to do work. When you said your co-worker brushes at their desk, do you mean hair or teeth? I brush my hair at my desk often. Not directly over my desk, but in my chair near the garbage can. Is there something wrong with that that I don't know? As for brushing teeth, yeah, that would be gross, but nearly impossible unless one had a sink at their desk.

FWIW, I'd rather hear or see someone blow their nose than the alternative.  I'm trying not to be too descriptive, but the major snorting that goes on this time of year just grosses me out.

I think it's disgusting. But that is because I have issues with the sound of the clippers, not quite so much the clipping itself.

Brushing teeth at your desk? Gross. Beyond gross.

Noseblowing in public? Gross, but sometimes necessary I suppose. I go into the bathroom to do it if at all possible.

DH likes to clip his nails all the time.  He does it in the living room, kitchen and car and that bugs me.  Fortunately he's never done it in front of other people.  I think I would have moved.  I can see clipping one nail discreetly... but it drives me nuts when he spends ten minutes clipping his nails.  I hate the sound.

With the issue of noseblowing - my sinuses are so weird that unless I feel it right about to come out of my nostrils, I can blow all I want and nothing will come out. Much of my sniffing comes from attempts to breathe through my nose since I am NOT a mouth breather(I feel like I look stupid with my mouth open). But I get really ticked at people who do blow their noses AT THE TABLE...and then OPEN THE TISSUE AND LOOK AT IT.

I also hate the sound of nail clippers unless I'm the one using them. Nail clippings don't bother me as much as the "CLINK!" noise.

Coming out of lurking mode to share this one:
I was at a car wash where you get out of your car and can watch it pass through the wash.  There is always a bit of a wait while the guys wipe down the car and finish washing the windows.  Some chick was sitting on the bench clipping her toenails!  Toenails flying all over the place!  Ick.  I gave her my horrified look and walked around the corner of the building to wait but I could still hear it, lol.
