Snow falling = I'm starving?
« on: February 13, 2007, 06:09:36 PM »
It is blowing and snowing right now, We are under blizzard warnings (Ohio for anyone keeping track of the weather)

I have dug the back door out 4 times since 1pm (it's 6pm now) and should go out again.

Question for you all

When it is snowing and blowing like this do you want to eat everything in the kitchen?  I have been hungry since I came home from work.  Yes, I did eat lunch and dinner.

You use more energy just staying warm when it's cold out, and looking at the snow as it falls can make you feel colder even in your nice warm livingroom. You also need to store some energy for digging out, right?

Oh, yeah. With all the snow we've gotten this year there's been plenty of extra food consumed, and not just by us. Our critters' pets in the backyard go through more birdseed when it's cold and/or snowy. They also need the extra energy to keep warm.

It's fun, though. The cats sit at the patio door and watch the birds and squirrels, especially loving it when I sprinkle seed right on the steps, and the parrot (a tropical bird) just loves "talking" to his outside critters. He gets really excited when it's snowing.

So how are you liking our Blizzard of 07??? Personally I think it SUCKS. I shoveled the drive twice just in 45 mins so hubby could get in from work. My neighbor went off in the ditch we all went out and dug her out and got her into her drive.

Schools are all ready cancled and hubby is willing to take the point and miss work tomorrow. Almost all roads around us are closed, he barely made it home.

As to the eatting YES im extra hungry, its the burning of calories from the cold and all the shoveling. Ill take a pic of ours tomorrow and show you, maybe us ohioans can compare the damage of all this crap. Were now getting the ice balls and they HURT when they hit.

Oh, you are so not alone in that! I am looking out the window at work watching it come down. So far i've eaten 3 bowls of chinese veggies and rice and have been dreaming all day of cooking up a nice juicy steak when i get home (not that we have any) and then maybe finishing it off with my spinach & ricotta white pizza that is in the fridge ... after that a few cups of hot cocoa and then maybe some chips and salsa.  ;D
Not that i could ever eat that much at once; but that is what has been going through my head.

modified to add...I'm in NJ. We've only got a few inches, if that. I hope the stuff that hit you comes our way. I  want a good snowed in day.
It's alright, man. I'm only bleeding, man. Stay hungry, stay free, and do the best you can.

Just went out again and shoveled out the back door -- Knee high again, had to put my sholder to it to get it open enough to get out to clear it.

Momto3daughters - whereabouts are you? sounds like you are south of me.  About 50 miles north of Dayton, we just have a LOT of blowing snow.

I gave up on the driveway. I got the car in it and am now fighting a battle just to keep the door passable.

At least the car is within 3 feet of the street.  So I can just gun it out.  I THINK that they have plowed the street at least once today.

<<<sigh>>>

you would think that with the garage the snowplows live in just down the street that we would have the best cleared street in town.....but, noooooo, they get to the corner and raise the blade. (town trucks, in town)  so we have one little path down the street even after every street in town is clear.

I've been craving pizza all day, but I don't have the heart to call for pizza delivery.   You know, when they were predicting this storm yesterday I considered buying a Papa Murphy's pizza and putting it in the fridge.  Sigh.  Because I cannot have the food I am craving, I am trying to quell the craving by eating everything else in the house.  It is not working.

I'm in central Indiana, and the storm is almost done with us.  Still lots of wind and blowing snow, though.

Just reading this thread made me hungry!!!!
Northern MA and still haven't seen any snow :(.

My family in Maine called to ask, they're expecting to get hit hard, schools are already cancelled in anticipation.

Biggest surprise is we're supposed to get hit with it by midnight, I haven't seen any trucks out yet (my road is usually sanded early because they can't get to it quickly once they begin plowing), it's already 11 PM.
I hope it SNOWS!  I made brownies, have stuff to make cookies, lots of chocolate and jello and whipped cream (it is Valentine's Day after all).   It's been a cold month so far and our total winter accumulation lies somewhere around 2 inches.  If it's cold, it might as well look pretty right?

Snow to me means a big pot of soup, either home-made chicken noodle (yes, I make my own noodles) or home-made chili, with a loaf of fresh baked bread.   I LOVE snow days.... I may pretend to have one tomorrow!   Then again, I was thinking about making swiss steak and smashed potatoes.

Now I want to go cook something.

Im up past Columbus toward the north. Near Mansfield. Our house is pretty high up on the basement so we can get out of the house easily but theres no way we can get out of the drive. Dont try to go anywhere unless its an emergency everywhere I look its a level 3.

I was home on a snow day yesterday and I kept snacking all day! Don't know if it was because of the snow or because I was bored.

I'm guessing if it's blowing and snowing it's also pretty dismal and dark. Your wanting to eat everything in the house could very well be the result of not enough sunlight which affects your brain's seratonin production. (I think it produces less> or more... lol.. I can't remember!) It can pretty much put your body in hibernation mode, making you overly tired, generally blah feeling, and it makes you crave carbs.

Those of us who are particularly sensitive to these changes feel like that ALL WINTER LONG. But I can imagine that people with a lower sensitivity would still suffer effects when it is particularly dismal outside.

Blah...No school = no pay :P

On the bright side, I took the snow shovels out of the garage and put them in the house, so we don't have to battle drifts to get them.

And I have a good supply of Pop Tarts.

I'm all set.

I've heard that it's a deeply ingrained "survival" instinct that when there's a show of bad weather, the animals that we are, feel compelled to store up calories and fat reserves in anticipation of not being able to find or get food.
It's not what we gather along the way that matters.  It's what we scatter.
