Laundry Questions
« on: February 14, 2007, 03:06:41 PM »
While making a craft project, I got hot glue all over a skirt, which has since dried. Does that have any effect on the settings you would use to launder said skirt? (The ongoing battle with my laundry continues!)

Oops - I've done this myself. I was able to get it all off by first peeling off the bigger portions, and then using ice directly on the remaining small areas. Faussoni's right, do not dry the skirt before getting it all off or it may stain the skirt/ruin the dryer. Hope this helps!

Oh, good, I'll do that, then. I'd get in a lot of trouble if I ruined the dorm dryer. We only have two.

I tend to be a bit klutzy, so if it can be spilled on something - I've done it! This is why I own very little white. :P

Same here. I also own very little that costs more than I'm willing to throw away after one wearing, for the same reason.

If you can, put it in a freezer.  When frozen hard, it should all come off.  You might have to pick at it a bit.

I went to iron DS1's trousers once & found chewing gum in the pocket.  Yuck!  But it came off ok after I froze them.

(If it was PVA glue, the directions on the big bottles we have at work say to soak the garment in a cold solution of washing powder overnight then rub to get the glue out before washing.  Seems to work alright, but I usually don't spot glue on the boys clothes* until washed & dried, & you really need to soak before any washing.)

*Or I forget I've got glue on my clothes until washed & dried!

I bought a VERY expensive silk blouse to go to my cousin's wedding.

I can't bring myself to wear it again. So, for fear of staining it and wasting the money, it's sitting in my closet - completely wasted. Irrational, I know, but I can't help it.

What fear? If I'm wearing it a stain is a certainty! If I don't stain it myself, the bird or one of the cats will do it for me.

Silk, eh? Nope, haven't had any of that stuff since I wore a nice silk blouse to work in a darkroom in the '80s. Don't know which chemical I got all over it, but it didn't show up until I had it cleaned after only one wearing. What a waste.

Then again, I was the bridesmaid who got attacked by a dressing-soaked cherry tomato at my brother's wedding. Stupid thing launched from my salad bowl with only the teeniest bit of help from my fork and landed smack in the middle of my cleavage. I felt like I was in a Three Stooges short.

Oh, Gosh...Too bad you didn't just stick some rhinestones, big colorful gems and some feathers on while the glue was wet, then you'd have this very interesting skirt.   ; )    (Can you tell I watch Carol Duvall's show?)

I don't know how to remove the glue, but I agree that putting it into the dryer would be a bad idea since it could melt.  I wonder if you can find any information on the package the glue came in or contact a craft store with the question.  There are some suggestions on line if you google 'removing hot glue from fabric'.  I wonder if it is water soluable.  On one of those pages I brought up someone suggested that some of it is water soluable.
I've never knitted anything I could recognize when it was finished.  Actually, I've never finished anything, much to my family's relief.
