Where do I begin? There have been so many Ehell experience in my life. I think that I will start with the health insurance company in NYC, which we will call "Multiplanet".
I got hired as a biostatician, though in my six months there I never did anything in that field. To this day I have no idea what I was actually hired for. During my six months I basically sat at my desk and did nothing.
My boss was a former RN, as were all of her colleagues, who all had their own offices, which they made use of in a special way. Since the whole place was oddly lax (except for the mostly minority call agents who never stopped taking calls) the nurses would leave for "lunch" and never come back. All they had to do was close their doors and no one would look for them (since there was no work to do). They shopped all day. After a while it wasn't just in the area of the office but increasingly long trips by subway and cab to other stores.
So here I was - in an aisle cubicle being watched by everyone, as I did nothing but sit there. Eventually I was told to make a newsletter, which I did, even putting a design around the outside. My boss (RN) approved it and it went out. There was a HUGE negative response to the professionalism of the newsletter and (guess what) it was my fault! Not my non-existent boss who approved it! I guess she had never heard of such a thing and I somehow put something out without her knowledge! Ok fine, this kind of thing was to be expected.
To avoid this happening again, I was put under the medical director's secretary. She had "publishing experience" – which consisted of being a secretary at a publishing firm. I guess her high school education also stood her in good stead at the age of 25. I should add that I had two Masters degrees. But it gets better.
Now Miss Blonde decided I should write on diabetes. Fine, I could do that. The problem was that she had a limited education and only knew the disease from her sister and from talking about it. All medical terms just went past her; any writing above a level of sixth grade left her confused. The newsletter was to go out to staff and while it was ok to be colloquial, some "grown-up" medical terms were to be expected.
So who did they hire to be the boss in this department,that is who was the medical director? Lets call him, Larry - a neurosurgeon. Now anyone who works in healthcare knows that this is not a standard medical director. I have no idea why he was working here. This is a man who spent 12 years in medical school and typically earns over $600,00, a sum no one could pay him for what is a desk job. A retired internist or pediatrician usually holds the job.
One day I get called into his office and fired for bad work. What work? Of course his secretary is there and she adds that I sexually harassed her stating, "when I spoke to you, you looked like you wanted to kiss me". I fell out of my chair when that was tossed at me! No way was this close to the truth. I hated her with a feeling that was unfathomable. The only part of me that wanted to “kiss” her was my fist!
So I leave the medical director’s office where I find two security guards as big as they could find – they were more like two personal bodyguards. This was in case I had decided to fight someone or do something.
I left in disgrace and had to come back the next day to return a laptop they forced me to have despite the fact that it, also had no purpose.
