I would like to know from the non-American e-hellions if they've read and/or seen the play. If you respond, please let me know where you live, if you read it or saw it and what you thought of the play. thanks.
I had to read it in high school. I went to high school in the south of Johannesburg (South Africa). I still live in Johannesburg.
We were told what a fantastic play it was, yadda, but all I can remember about the story is that I was hoping the guy would hurry up and die already so we could put him out of our misery! (Yes, I know I'm mangling that saying - trust me, it's on purpose.) That had to be one of the most boring plays I've ever read. No wonder high school English puts people off reading for life! Snore-fest of note; sorry.
FYI, we also had to read
Hamlet (which I quite enjoyed),
Romeo and Juliet (teenagers are stupid; gee, this is NEWS?!),
Sons and Lovers (a book about *nothing* - I read
Waiting for Godot in university and it was more exciting than that stupid book) and
Cry, the Beloved Country (dude, use decent punctuation!). Why oh why do education muckety-mucks torture students?!
I teach Grade 6 and we're currently reading
Dracula. The kids seem to be enjoying it.
