wingadingdingy Cheney will be landing here in Sydney soon..
« on: February 22, 2007, 05:55:24 AM »
Do any of my wonderful North American ehellion friends know why wingadingdingy Cheney is coming here for?
What does he stand for in America??
Why are there so many secret service guys(with guns!)and our Police blocking off roads, asking people to stay out of certain area etc for?
Its Thursday now,so fine..but its going to be kaos over Friday/Saturday nights in the City(Sydney)and The Rocks area..everyone ready to spend time out in the clubs/pubs/restaurants etc etc..yet they dont want anyone around..including people for businesses, people dropping suppiles off for businesses/restaurants etc

Ok,fully understand that he might be a high official(or whatever)but the average everyday person is still trying to make a living,or blow off some steam and enjoy the weekend.

I could understand if it was the President..but why cant he just come here and be welcomed as any other VIP tourist?

Perhaps someone can enlighten me of the importance of this man in America(or lack there of?*L*)

I havent really heard much about him being here..but was kinda shocked to already see so many protestors out and about Sydney, and a high Police presence.

Dont get me wrong. I love the USA..and i guess cause im kinda clueless to the whole 'wingadingdingy Cheney' thing..i dont know..a bit over the top??Or not??

I wish him a good enjoyable time here though, and really hope he gets to see some of Sydney/Australia before he leaves again, and not just always in the back of a limo or hotel room.

Cheers

He's the Vice President of the US, not just some random VIP. http://www.whitehouse.gov/vicepresident/

I apologize for the chaos.  It's much the same over here when the President/Vice President go anywhere.

I sometimes wonder what the Vice President does all day.  Basically, he's the spare.  If anything happens to the President (JFK, Franklin Roosevelt), the Vice President takes over (Lyndon Johnson, Harry Truman).  Also, he presides over the Senate, though I far as I know, that's more of a formality than having any real power.  Although in the rare case that the Senate votes 50/50 on something, he casts the deciding vote.

With Cheney, it's a little different.  A lot of people speculate (some as a joke, some seriously), that he is quasi the "man behind the curtains", someone with a lot of unseen power and control over the President.  He's really more of a background figure, I think, and you don't see him in the media much, and he won't be running for President next year, something VPs very often do (see Al Gore).

Anyway, hope that helped.  Gosh, I hope that's all right?   :-\ Correct me if I'm wrong, please!  It's all I can remember from my social studies class in Jr. High.  That, and the preamble to the Constitution, which we were required to memorize in order to pass the class.  "We, the peopel of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union,..."

But on the subject of chaos, President Bush visited Vienna last year.  Everyone was so angry about this, because they don't really like him, and the whole downtown was closed off, and everyone was late going everywhere.  And do you know what they were most angry about?

"And he's only staying for one day!"

One could speculate that the police presence is to prevent Vice President Cheney from shooting anyone! True story: He was turkey hunting with a lawyer friend in Texas and SHOT the poor man (with bird shot, painful but not life-threatening)! And the person he shot APOLOGIZED for being in the wrong place! Like it was his fault the VP shot him.

The Vice President is second in command, if Pres. Bush becomes incapacitated for any reason then Cheney will take over the duties of the President. This is taken VERY seriously, to the point if there is a security alert, the VP is taken to a "satellite" location in rural Virginia far away from DC, and far away from wherever the president is. A coworker's parents live in tiny rural Virginia town where "secret" satellite White House is located, but it is not very secret when coworker's parents call him up and say "They must have raised the terror alert for DC, all those black Secret Service cars are going up and down the road here, I guess Cheney is on his way."

Just be patient and polite and expect to take detours or have delays, usually they try to clear roads when transporting these VIPs from point A to point B. Hopefully if all the local police are working together with Secret Service, the delays won't be too long. Secret Service guys are efficient!

Actually, it's "We, the People, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare of and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

How do I still remember this? Why, School House Rock, of course!!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled topic. It's not actually unusual for a Vice President to travel with a contigent of Secret Servicemen, but I can't imagine what a logistical nightmare that must be for a major city!

BTW, Joy, you stole my bit about the Secret Servicemen preventing him from shooting someone.  :P ;D

Oops, I misspelled 'people'!  But 'of the United States' is also in there, I think.  Yeah, I remember all the things 'We the people' planned to do, but never in the right order!  Hmm, is it 'promote the general welfare' first, or 'establish justice first'...

And school house rock is the greatest!

"I'm just a bill, yes I'm only a bill, and I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill..."

Yep, you're right..."We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect Union..." and so on and so forth. The School House Rock version omits the first "of the United States," I guess because it doesn't fit into the song's meter.

Everything else, so far as I know, is correct, although I'm not sure if there is an "of" after "general welfare" or not - I think it doesn't go there, but I could be wrong. Hmm, after all these years, School House Rock led me astray! Ack!

Cheney is a VERY controversial Vice President. Many people blame him for Iraq and very much believe that he is the power behind Bush. In fact that he has so much power he doesn't even need to be President.

Also, his company Haliberton (sp?) was awarded the contract to clean up Iraq without bidding to any other companies, and many saw this as his motivation for starting the war in the first place. Not to mention him and his friends huge oil interests.

So needless to say, he's not very popular among the left wingers and there is a much higher security issue with him than any other Vice President.

But I think it's very rude that he gets to shut down an entire downtown area, why couldn't he go to a less populated place if he needs that much distance between himself and the "little people".
