Favorite Children's Books Rediscovered!
« on: February 20, 2007, 02:51:23 PM »
I am sure this topic has been done before, but I always enjoy hearing about favorite childhood books.

The ones that addicted you to reading.  So, other than the classics, what are some little-known or obscure books that you remember reading and loving as a child?

Here are mine:

Girl with the Silver Eyes, by Willo Davis Roberts.  In 5th grade we had to choose an author to write to, and I remember how excited I was when Ms. Roberts wrote back!

Lizzie Lies A Lot

The House with the Clock in its Walls, and the other Lewis Barnevelt books.  Go Rose Rita!

And one that I have been searching for for years:

The Secret of Strawbridge Place.   I remembered the plot to this book and, mistakenly, that the word "strawberry" appeared somewhere in the title.  I have literally searched off and on for probably 10 years for this book.  I recently found it in an online search and ONLY because the person writing about it used the word Strawberry in place of Strawbridge, as I had myself!  I am waiting for it to arrive now!

So, what about yours??

The "Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle" ones.  The "Encyclopedia Brown" ones.  The ones by Beverly Cleary that are about a boy - one of them describes a family trip he took (Homer?  His name starts with an H.)

Is that Henry Huggins?

Yes!  Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle.  Forgot that one.

And one called "The Bad Times of Irma Baumlein."

I got the "Little House on the Prarie" series of books for Christmas one year when I must've been about 8 or 9.  I made tally marks on the package of how often I read the whole series, I stopped counting eventually, but I still noted more than 15 tallies.

Such great books!

"The Plain Princess" by Phyllis McGinley.  The artwork was so beautiful and the story was very sweet.

I am currently searching for "Tweedles Be Brave" by Wolo.  My FIL remembers it fondly but I can only find it on ebay for $250!  It's a children's book! I keep hoping to find it in a used bookstore or garage sale someday.

BTW, If you are ever searching for a children's book and cannot remember the name, there is a great website called loganberrybooks.  That is how I found the title of my FIL's book, "Tweedles Be Brave".  The only information he gave me was it was about a lazy monkey king called Mogus.

I loved the Wedding Procession of the Rag Doll and the Broom Handle and the Velveteen Rabbit!  I'll have to see if my local library has them because now I want to read them again.  :)

CRUD MONKEYS!! I'm so glad I'm not the only one who loved this book to pieces. I bought it off Scholastic book orders when I was in 4th or 5th grade, can't remember which, and read it until it literally fell apart (then again, I haven't really lost that tendency).

Please pass the Calgon

My Grandmother gave me her copies of the Ruth Fielding series. She had read them as a girl. I loved those books. http://www.seriesbooks.com/ruthfielding.htm

I'm fond of CW Anderson's books and spent years, before eBay, hunting for a copy of "A Pony For Linda" which was a favorite of mine as a child.   "The Long Winter" is another favorite.
